Ujjwal Ratan has been appointed Chief AI Officer at Optum Insight, part of UnitedHealth Group, as the healthcare technology business looks to expand its focus on artificial intelligence and agentic AI. Ratan will be responsible for shaping the AI strategy and building the platforms, models and intelligence needed to support connected AI capabilities across the healthcare ecosystem.
Ratan brings extensive experience across artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and healthcare technology. Before joining Optum, he spent several years at Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he held multiple leadership and technical positions, including Head of ML and Data Science for Healthcare and Life Sciences, Principal AI/Machine Learning Solutions Architect, Senior AI/Machine Learning Solutions Architect and Solutions Architect.
Announcing the move in a LinkedIn post, Ratan said, “I'm excited to share that I've joined Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, as Chief AI Officer for Optum Insight. My mandate is to give this engine the platform, models, intelligence and strategy to operate as one connected agentic network for healthcare.”
His appointment comes at a time when healthcare organisations are increasingly exploring generative and agentic AI for data analysis, automation, decision support and operational workflows. Ratan's new mandate will involve developing AI capabilities that can work across different parts of the healthcare ecosystem and make use of connected data.
Connected Data is Foundation for Agentic AI
In his LinkedIn post, Ratan highlighted the importance of connected and interoperable data for the next phase of AI development. He pointed to Optum's presence across providers, payers, pharmacy, life sciences and government programmes as a key foundation for developing AI systems across healthcare.
He said, “Agentic AI only works if the agents have real, connected data to reason over — and few organizations sit across as much of the healthcare journey as Optum does.”
Ratan also described the opportunity as an extension of the work he has pursued throughout his career, particularly around creating an interoperable AI foundation that can support the wider healthcare system.
Extensive AI and Healthcare Technology Experience
Ratan's career spans AI, machine learning, healthcare analytics, data architecture, data warehousing and responsible AI. Before AWS, he served as Senior Architect in the Health Sciences Division at TechDemocracy LLC and worked as a Technical Architect at HCLTech.
Earlier, he held Senior Applications Engineer and Applications Engineer positions at Oracle Corporation. His experience across enterprise technology and healthcare gives him a background spanning both the technical architecture and industry-specific requirements involved in deploying AI at scale.
His professional work has also included research and publications involving areas such as federated learning, healthcare machine learning and AI applications in medical data.
AI Across the Healthcare Ecosystem
Optum Insight develops technology and analytics capabilities used by hospitals, health plans, life sciences companies and government programmes. Ratan's role is expected to bring these capabilities together through a more connected AI strategy.
The appointment adds an experienced AI and healthcare technology leader to Optum Insight as the industry moves towards more interconnected AI systems and increasingly autonomous enterprise workflows.
