A project sponsored by the European Commission under Framework Programme 7 (FP7), and supported by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (MCIT), Government of India, is an ambitious strategic initiative with the core objective to enhance the impact of the significantly progressing EU-India research policy dialogues in the Information Technology domain...
In this framework, the project developed a 'Position Paper' containing EU-India joint ICT research priorities and policy recommendations, including specific research dimensions of the priorities shortlisted at the 6th EU-India ICT Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting held in March 2009 in Brussels. The Position Paper is the outcome of the discussions and deliberations of two Think Thank meetings held among high level EU-Indian ICT experts who are part of the Synchroniser Steering Committee (SSC).
The Position Paper lists the priority areas for joint research based on "Top-Down" and "Bottom-Up"approaches along with key recommendations made by the SSC members for boosting the impact of the policy dialogue in the field of ICT and strengthening the international dimension of EU India ICT research programme, followed by highlighting future ICT research priorities for India for the next ten years identified by 30 Indian visionaries. The Position Paper also provides an outline of Europe's Horizon 2020 (the EU Framework Programme for Research and innovation from 2014-2020), and India's 12th Five Year Plan (2012 - 2017).
Based on the Top-Down approach of identifying new and evolving technologies, the following research priorities are shortlisted: IPv6, Internet of Things, Smart Grids, Satellite Communication, GNSS - Galileo, Trust, Security, Privacy & Monitoring, DNS Security, Cloud Computing, Sensor Networks and Intelligent Transport Systems. The Bottom-up approach areas, as suggested by the SSC experts are the ones that address societal concerns, which are common issues with localized needs: e-Inclusion, e-Governance, e-Health, Ambient Assisted Living, Digital Preservation, Language Technology, EU-India Regulation & Standardization and e-Learning.
This valuable document will serve as an input for the next EU-India ICT JWG, the official meeting between the Department of IT, Government of India and the DG INFSO of the European Commission.
