YouTube could be exploring a new direction in social networking through an experimental project reportedly named Tamba. References discovered in the Android version of its app suggest that Google may be testing a separate social platform featuring private profiles, follower networks, direct messages and group conversations.

The reported development comes as social platforms increasingly blend video consumption with personal communication. While YouTube Shorts competes for attention in the short-form video market, Tamba could explore a different opportunity: helping users connect and interact around the content they share.

Google has not officially confirmed the project, and there is no information about a potential public launch.

Tamba Leak Reveals Social Features

Industry reports indicate that references to Tamba were found in version 21.44.534 of the YouTube Android application. The discovery reportedly includes a separate application package, com.google.android.youtube.sandbox, a dedicated logo and 38 custom interface icons.

The icons reportedly cover features such as a home feed, search, camera, inbox, chat, stickers and content creation. Code references to followers, follow requests and approvals further suggest that the project could support profiles with privacy controls.

Other references point to direct messaging, group chats, photo and video sharing, and voice replies. Collectively, these elements suggest a social experience that could extend beyond watching and uploading videos.

However, these findings come from an experimental software build. They do not confirm that all the features will reach users or that Tamba will launch as a standalone application.

Shorts Could Become Part of Conversations

One particularly notable possibility is the reported ability to play YouTube Shorts directly within conversations. If implemented, this could make video sharing more interactive, allowing users to watch and discuss clips without switching between different experiences.

YouTube already has a vast content library spanning entertainment, gaming, education, technology and other categories. Bringing this content closer to private conversations could create additional opportunities for discovery through friends and communities.

The potential distinction is that Tamba may not need to compete with Instagram solely through visual feeds. Instead, it could combine video discovery with private communication, giving users another way to engage with content and each other.

A New Social Platform or an Internal Test?

The โ€œsandboxโ€ label in the reported application package suggests Tamba may still be under development. Google frequently experiments with features that do not necessarily become public products, so the discovery should not be treated as confirmation of an upcoming launch.

The key question is whether Google intends to build a separate social app or is testing ideas that could eventually influence YouTube itself. A standalone platform would also need to offer a clear reason for users to adopt another service in an already crowded social media market.

For now, Tamba remains an unconfirmed project. If Google develops it further, the concept could signal a broader ambition to connect video discovery, messaging and social engagement within its ecosystem.
