In a significant development in the search ecosystem, officials from the US Justice Department are seeking judicial intervention to address Alphabet-owned Google’s monopoly in the internet search market, according to a report by The Guardian.
Last month, The Department of Justice of the US (DoJ) submitted court filings indicating it may pursue “structural remedies” to restrict Google from leveraging products like Chrome, Play, and Android, which it claims provide the company with an unfair advantage over competitors, the report further reveals.
The DoJ is expected to push for Google to sell off the Chrome browser and implement a judge’s mandate for new regulations concerning artificial intelligence and its Android operating systems of smartphones.
Many competition officials from several US states have participated in the case against the research firm Google and are planning to recommend Amit Mehta, the federal judge to foist data licensing requirements.
Google has reverted to the proceedings and plans to challenge any case imposed by the DoJ. Also, the Alphabet-owned research firm considers the proposal as the government’s “overreach” holding potential harm on the consumers. “This is the start of a long process and we will respond in detail to the DOJ's ultimate proposals as we make our case in court next year,” said Lee-Anne Mulholland, Vice President, of Regulatory Affairs in a statement released on 9th Oct, 2024.
If the proposals get approved by Mehta, it could significantly transform the global online search market, where Google holds 90% of the share, and redefine the company’s position in the rapidly expanding AI industry.
In the US, the proposal against Google comes after an August court ruling in favour of the DoJ, which determined the firm had breached antitrust laws and invested billions to establish an unlawful monopoly.
“This case is about a set of search distribution contracts. Rather than focus on that, the government seems to be pursuing a sweeping agenda that will impact numerous industries and products, with significant unintended consequences for consumers, businesses, and American competitiveness. The DOJ’s outline also comes at a time when competition in how people find information is blooming, with all sorts of new entrants emerging and new technologies like AI transforming the industry.”
