In a significant step toward enhancing digital identity experiences in India, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) unveiled the beta version of its all-new Aadhaar mobile app ‘Aadhaar FaceRD’. The new app is a testament to the government’s continued efforts to make Aadhaar services more user-friendly, privacy-conscious, and technologically advanced.
One of the most groundbreaking features of the updated Aadhaar app is the inclusion of face authentication. This new biometric feature allows users to verify their identity through live facial recognition using the Aadhaar Face RD service. Particularly beneficial for individuals who face difficulties with fingerprint-based verification such as senior citizens or those with worn fingerprints, face authentication offers a seamless and inclusive method of identity confirmation. UIDAI reports that over 150 million face authentications are already being processed each month, highlighting the growing scale and reliability of this biometric system.
In addition to biometric upgrades, the app introduces a highly secure and convenient QR code-based verification system. Users can now share their Aadhaar details digitally by scanning or generating a QR code, eliminating the need for physical copies or photocopies of their identity documents. This feature is expected to revolutionize identity verification in everyday scenarios, whether it’s checking into a hotel, clearing airport security, submitting KYC at a bank, or authenticating for government services. Aadhaar verification is now possible with just a smartphone, putting the power of digital identity directly in the hands of users.
Privacy has been placed at the center of the new app's architecture. The updated platform allows individuals to share only selected information, such as name, masked Aadhaar number, or address based on consent and relevance. This granular control ensures that users disclose only what is necessary, thereby significantly reducing the risk of identity misuse. All data exchanges are end-to-end encrypted, and the consent-based design prevents unauthorized access to personal information.
The new Aadhaar app also supports a wide range of use cases. For travelers, it enables contactless and paperless identification at airports and railway stations. For citizens accessing welfare schemes or digital services, the app makes it easier to authenticate and receive benefits without visiting Aadhaar centers. In the banking and fintech ecosystem, it streamlines e-KYC processes with real-time biometric verification. Furthermore, for businesses and institutions requiring identity checks such as telecom providers or educational institutions, the app provides a fast, secure, and fully digital alternative.
As of today, UIDAI handles over 230 crore Aadhaar authentications each month across banking, telecom, government services, and more. The introduction of this advanced mobile app is set to further expand the role of Aadhaar as a cornerstone of India’s digital ecosystem, offering a future-ready solution that is both inclusive and secure.
The beta version of the Aadhaar app is now available for download via the Google Play Store and will soon be available on the Apple App Store. UIDAI encourages early adopters to explore the app and provide feedback, helping shape a more user-centric digital identity experience for all Indians.
