Elon Musk’s Starlink is finally ready to enter the Indian market, with commercial operations expected to begin within the next two months. The move follows the company’s recent approval from India’s Department of Telecommunications, which granted it a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license, clearing a major regulatory hurdle.

Starlink’s internet service will be priced at ₹3,000 per month for unlimited high-speed data, with users required to purchase a hardware kit (including the dish and router) for ₹33,000. A one-month free trial will be offered to new users, according to sources familiar with the company’s rollout plans.

Targeting India’s Connectivity Gaps

The service is aimed at users in remote and underserved areas where traditional broadband remains limited or unreliable. Starlink’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network is designed to deliver high-speed internet with low latency, making it ideal for rural India, border regions, and hilly terrain.

Partnering with Indian Telecom Giants

Starlink has already established distribution partnerships with major Indian telecom players, including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, which are expected to assist in deployment and retail logistics. However, the company must still secure spectrum allocation and final approvals from India’s space regulator IN-SPACe and national security agencies before fully launching services.

Rising Competition in India’s Satellite Internet Market

India’s satellite internet space is heating up, with Starlink joining rivals like OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. While Starlink is expected to offer a premium product, its entry has stirred debate among domestic telecom operators, particularly around spectrum pricing. Industry players have raised concerns over the lower regulatory fees proposed for satellite firms compared to terrestrial operators.

With more than 7,000 satellites in orbit and millions of global users, Starlink’s India entry could be a game-changer in bridging the digital divide especially if it meets its timeline for launch before August 2025.
