Provide training to employees on data privacy: Whatfix

With the growing adoption of technology, data always remains at risk of being hacked or misused. Vulnerable security framework provides a window to hackers to enter into their systems and steal the data. Data Privacy Day is the perfect opportunity for all to recheck data security module and update as per the required need. While talking to DT, Satya Machiraju, VP, Information Security, Whatfix shared crucial insights about data privacy. Take a look.

Importance of Data Privacy Day

Data Privacy Day, celebrated on January 28th, aims at creating awareness about securing personal and organizational data through having various safeguards in place. With accelerating digital transformation initiatives, data protection concerns are also heightened since personal data is being considered the “New Gold”. Various countries and geographies have realized this new concern and have implemented stringent norms around data protection. The goal of the Data Privacy Day is to educate individuals and organizations about the potential risks associated with the collection, storage, and sharing of personal information, and to encourage them to take steps to protect their data privacy.

Today’s rapid adoption of digital technologies has left users more vulnerable, with their personal data exposed through social media and public forums. There are numerous challenges such as lack of understanding about data privacy, increasing use of personal data for targeted advertising, limited government regulation, no data backup and security measures to mitigate threats, lack of framework in place for post cyberattack attempts. Data Privacy Day promotes the use of best practices for protecting personal information through the use of strong passwords, using encryption to protect sensitive data, and being aware of phishing scams.

Data Protection Bill’s Advantages

The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, if implemented, is expected to give individuals more control over their personal data and to hold companies accountable for protecting that data. It necessitates companies to obtain consent from individuals before collecting their personal data and to inform them about the purpose for which their data is being collected. The revised data protection Bill eases the rules regarding cross-border data flows and increases penalties for breaches. There is also a provision for easier compliance requirements for start-ups. The allocation of Rs. 515 crores for cybersecurity programs for the year 2022-23 will facilitate and further boost the cybersecurity ecosystem in the country.

The Bill is intended to give individuals more control over their personal data and how it is used. It includes provisions for the rights of individuals to access, correct, and delete their personal data, as well as the right to be forgotten. The bill also includes penalties for companies that violate the law, including fines and imprisonment for company officials. Hence, it’s expected that the bill will help Indians in protecting their interest in terms of personal data protection. It will also bring India's personal data protection laws in line with global standards, which will be beneficial for companies operating in India and Indian citizens who use services provided by these companies.
