OpenAI has claimed a major breakthrough in advanced mathematics, saying its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model helped solve a long-standing problem linked to the Navier-Stokes equations, one of the most challenging mathematical problems of the past 90 years. The company says the work was completed in just 88 hours by deploying thousands of AI agents to explore the problem and develop a mathematical proof.

The Navier-Stokes equations are fundamental to understanding how fluids move, with applications spanning physics, engineering, weather modelling and other scientific fields. However, key aspects of the equations have remained mathematically unresolved for decades.

The problem is also one of the Clay Mathematics Institute’s Millennium Prize Problems, a group of seven mathematical challenges carrying a $1 million prize for each problem that is successfully solved and accepted.

OpenAI Deploys 10,000 AI Agents

OpenAI described its result as a “milestone” for AI-powered mathematical reasoning. According to the company, it began training a new internal model toward the end of August after researchers observed that the system was particularly capable at solving complex mathematical problems.

OpenAI subsequently deployed approximately 10,000 AI agents to work on selected advanced mathematical challenges. Rather than relying on a single AI system to produce an answer, the agents were used to explore different approaches, test mathematical ideas and contribute to the development of the eventual proof.

Mathematical Proof Yet to Be Verified

However, OpenAI’s claim has not yet received independent verification or formal recognition from the Clay Mathematics Institute. The distinction is important because solving a Millennium Prize Problem requires a proposed solution to undergo rigorous mathematical scrutiny before it can be considered officially resolved.

Claim Sparks Controversy

The announcement has also triggered controversy within the mathematics and AI communities. Tristan Buckmaster, a mathematics professor at New York University, said he and Levent Alpöge, a mathematician associated with OpenAI rival Anthropic, had been independently working on the Navier-Stokes problem using OpenAI’s Codex tool.

Buckmaster alleged that information about their progress may have reached OpenAI before the company announced its own work. OpenAI rejected the suggestion that it had accessed their research, saying it had not seen their work through any means before it was publicly released.

OpenAI Responds to Data Concerns

OpenAI also said that, while it could not completely rule out the possibility that de-identified data derived from product usage contributed to model improvements, no user data was accessed during its Navier-Stokes research.

The company added that its proof differs significantly from the work by Buckmaster and Alpöge, including differences in the precise results that were established.

A Potential Turning Point for AI Research

If independently validated, the achievement could mark a significant step forward for AI-assisted mathematical research. It would demonstrate how large groups of autonomous AI agents can work collectively on highly complex mathematical problems that have challenged researchers for generations.
