Mukesh Ambani has partnered with the world’s richest businessman, Elon Musk, in a deal to introduce Starlink Satellite internet services to the Indian market. This collaboration is a strategic move aimed at broadening the country’s wired structure and providing high-speed internet accessibility to the remote areas of India.
Reliance Jio released a statement on its social media platform X handle stating that this agreement is subject to SpaceX’s earning authorization to sell its products in India and enabling each other to explore the areas to extend their services. “Jio and SpaceX are also evaluating other complementary areas of cooperation to leverage their respective infrastructure to further enhance India’s digital ecosystem.”
“Jio will not only offer Starlink equipment in its retail outlets but will establish a mechanism to support customer service installation and activation,” the statement said.
“Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformation step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all. By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability and accessibility of high-speed broadband in this AI-driven era, empowering communities and businesses across the country,” said Mathew Oommen, Group CEO, Reliance Jio.
“We applaud Jio’s commitment to advancing India’s connectivity. We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorization from the Government of India to provide more people, organisations, and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services,” said Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX, in the joint statement.
Under this agreement, the Indian business tycoon will offer Starlink equipment in its retail outlets and online storefront, providing Starlink with a broader distribution network across its thousands of locations in the country and online reach. The collaboration aims to provide high-speed internet access to businesses, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and remote areas throughout India. Additionally, it is anticipated to facilitate internet services to places where setting fibre-optic cables is expensive or challenging.
The similar partnership with India's second-largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, was announced a day before the Reliance-Starlink deal. The deal will kick-start once it receives the government approval to launch operations in India.
Jio Platforms would provide installation and activation support for Starlink devices. Additionally, both companies are exploring further areas of cooperation to utilize their respective infrastructure, although specific details have not been disclosed.
Jio Platforms Limited is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited and has built a state-of-the-art all-IP data network with modern 4G and 5G LTE technology. On the other hand, Starlink has made a mark in delivering low-latency and high-speed internet for global users.
