Meta India Managing Director and Head Arun Srinivas has been named in two cyber crime cases registered by Hyderabad police over alleged morphed videos and posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook during protests related to the NEET paper leak controversy.
According to reports, Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have initiated proceedings after complaints were filed regarding multiple videos allegedly portraying the Prime Minister in an abusive manner. Authorities are preparing to issue a notice to Meta Platforms as part of the investigation.
Meta has said that it is cooperating with the authorities to address the matter.
Police Initiate Probe Into Facebook Content
The cases were registered following complaints alleging that manipulated videos and images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi were circulated through Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
Hyderabad Cyber Crime officials said they are coordinating with relevant agencies and investigating the origin, circulation, and handling of the alleged content.
It remains unclear why Arun Srinivas has been named personally in the cases. Legal experts have noted that holding senior executives personally responsible generally requires evidence of direct involvement, knowledge, or an active role in the alleged violation.
India Tightens Social Media Content Regulations
The development comes as India continues to strengthen regulations around online platforms and digital content moderation.
Under updated rules, social media platforms are required to act quickly on unlawful content flagged by government authorities or courts. Failure to comply can impact the legal protections available to platforms regarding user-generated content.
