Meta Platforms is reportedly in early-stage discussions with artificial intelligence startup Anthropic for a computing infrastructure agreement that could be worth up to $10 billion over two years, according to media reports. If finalized, the deal would represent one of the largest AI compute partnerships in the industry and signal Meta's ambitions to expand beyond its core advertising business into AI infrastructure services.
According to information reported by Reuters, Anthropic initiated the proposal in June, seeking access to Meta's large-scale computing infrastructure to support the growing demand for training and deploying its Claude family of AI models. The discussions remain preliminary, and there is no certainty that the negotiations will result in a final agreement.
Meta could enter the AI infrastructure leasing market
Under the proposed arrangement, Anthropic would reportedly make monthly payments to Meta in exchange for dedicated computing capacity over a two-year period. Both companies would retain the flexibility to terminate the agreement before the contract concludes.
The potential partnership would mark a strategic shift for Meta, which has primarily invested in AI infrastructure to power its own platforms and AI products rather than leasing capacity to external companies. A successful agreement could position Meta alongside specialized AI infrastructure providers such as CoreWeave and Nebius, which have benefited from surging demand for high-performance computing resources.
Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg had earlier indicated that offering cloud computing services remains a possibility for the company. Speaking during the company's shareholder meeting in May, Zuckerberg said Meta regularly receives requests from organizations seeking access to its AI infrastructure and models.
Rising demand for AI compute reshapes industry
The discussions come as AI companies race to secure access to advanced computing resources required for developing increasingly sophisticated foundation models. Demand for graphics processing units (GPUs), AI accelerators, storage systems, and large-scale data centre infrastructure has grown significantly, prompting technology companies to explore new partnerships and long-term infrastructure agreements.
Anthropic has already taken several steps to strengthen its computing capacity. According to publicly available information, the company entered into an agreement with SpaceX earlier this year to access computing resources at the Colossus 1 data centre in Memphis, Tennessee.
AI infrastructure becomes a strategic battleground
The reported talks highlight the growing importance of AI infrastructure as technology companies seek new revenue streams while supporting the rapid expansion of generative AI applications. Large-scale compute capacity has emerged as a critical competitive advantage, with leading AI developers increasingly relying on strategic partnerships to secure access to the processing power needed for model training and inference.
If the proposed agreement moves forward, it could establish Meta as a significant participant in the commercial AI infrastructure market while providing Anthropic with additional computing resources to accelerate the development of its AI models.
The companies have not officially announced any agreement, and according to media reports, negotiations remain ongoing.
