In today’s digital world, cybersecurity has become crucial due to the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyber threats. Last year, a hacker breached OpenAI's internal messaging frameworks, stealing details about the design of the company's AI technologies, according to the New York Times, quoted by Reuters.
The report discloses that hackers extracted details from an online forum where two of the OpenAI employees were discussing its latest technologies. However, they could not reach the systems where OpenAI houses and models its AI.
OpenAI executives informed employees during its all-hands meeting last year in April and briefed the company's board about the breach, according to the report. However, they chose not to disclose the incident publicly since no customer or partner information had been stolen.
OpenAI executives did not find the incident a threat to national security, as they believed the intruder did not have any ties with foreign government and was a mere private individual, the report said. Hence, the San Francisco-based firm did not inform the federal law enforcement agencies about the breach, it added.
“OpenAI in May said it had disrupted five covert influence operations that sought to use its AI models for "deceptive activity" across the internet, the latest to stir safety concerns about the potential misuse of the technology,” informs Reuters.
Reuters previously reported, citing sources, that the Biden administration was preparing to introduce new measures to protect U.S. AI technology from China and Russia. Preliminary plans included implementing safeguards around the most advanced AI models, such as ChatGPT.
In May, 16 firms developing AI pledged to come up with the technology safely at a global meeting, at a time when security risks are giving hard time to the regulators to keep up with rapid advancements and rising risks.
The 2023 security breach at OpenAI, highlights the ongoing challenges in safeguarding sensitive technological information. However, the breach did not steal the customer or partner data, it yet underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and the need for vigilance to protect digital assets and maintain trust in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
