As India accelerates its journey toward becoming a global tech manufacturing powerhouse, leading brands are increasingly anchoring their operations here. Acer India is actively expanding its domestic manufacturing and innovation capabilities to leverage this momentum. In an exclusive conversation with DT, Sanjeev Mehtani, Chief Sales Officer, Acer India outlines how the company is scaling its local operations in line with the nation’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Strengthening Local Manufacturing
Emphasizing India as a strategic hub for Acer’s operations, Sanjeev Mehtani stated, “At Acer, we have been deeply invested in expanding our local manufacturing footprint in line with the Government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. Currently, our assembly and production capabilities are centered in Noida, where we manufacture a broad portfolio including desktops, laptops, monitors, and other key components. This facility is equipped to meet both domestic demand and export potential.”
“By the end of 2025, we plan to significantly scale up this infrastructure, enhancing automation, deepening supply chain localization, and exploring partnerships with Indian ODMs. Our goal is to increase our output capacity while ensuring quality, agility, and sustainability in operations. Our vision is to position India as a key center for Acer’s global manufacturing and innovation efforts,” he said.
India’s Growing Appeal for Global Tech Manufacturing
Highlighting the country’s unique market potential, Sanjeev observed, “India today presents a unique convergence of opportunity and momentum. The sheer scale of domestic demand, coupled with a rapidly evolving digital ecosystem, makes it a compelling destination for global tech manufacturers. Add to that a large talent pool, competitive costs, and a proactive push from the government, and India becomes an obvious choice for global supply chain diversification.”
He also added, “The PLI (Production Linked Incentive) schemes, enhanced infrastructure, and growing investor confidence have collectively accelerated the move toward India-focused manufacturing strategies. For us, India represents more than just a market—it is a vital growth driver and a strategic hub within our global value chain.”
The Role of Government and Policy Makers
Stressing the importance of supportive policies, Sanjeev highlighted, “The role of policymakers has been both catalytic and constructive in shaping India’s tech manufacturing landscape. The government’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat, backed by incentives like the PLI scheme, has given OEMs and ODMs the confidence to scale their operations locally. Measures around import substitution, ease of doing business, and infrastructure modernization are steadily improving the manufacturing ecosystem.”
He also explained, “We see strong collaboration between industry and government, which is critical for sustained growth. At Acer, we actively engage with regulatory bodies to ensure our alignment with evolving norms, and we appreciate the government’s continued focus on making India a global manufacturing powerhouse.”
Challenges Facing Manufacturers in India
Acknowledging hurdles in scaling manufacturing, Sanjeev remarked, “While the momentum is strong, there are still critical challenges that need to be addressed to unlock the full potential of local manufacturing. Key among them is the need for a more robust component ecosystem, especially in semiconductors and advanced materials. Logistics infrastructure, while improving, also needs further optimization to ensure seamless intra-country movement.”
He also noted, “Talent readiness for high-end manufacturing, especially in emerging technologies like AI and robotics, is another area that needs sustained investment. Continued policy stability and faster implementation of reforms will go a long way in resolving these issues and enhancing India's global competitiveness.”
Opportunities for OEMs and ODMs
Looking ahead, Sanjeev underscored the potential for design-led manufacturing and innovation. He said, “The next few years will be pivotal for India’s transition from an assembly-led base to a design-led manufacturing hub. OEMs and ODMs have immense opportunities in areas such as AI-enabled devices, edge computing infrastructure, green manufacturing, and exports. The growing demand for locally produced IT hardware in sectors like education, healthcare, and public services is also creating massive scale potential.”
“At Acer, we believe the time is ripe to move beyond traditional production models and embrace co-innovation with Indian partners. Whether it’s through R&D collaborations, component localization, or smart factory integration, OEMs and ODMs have a critical role in shaping India’s digital future. We are excited to be part of this transformation journey,” he concluded.
