The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued an alert to the public regarding a new scam targeting State Bank of India (SBI) customers. As per the advisory from this government agency, scammers are sending deceptive messages that encourage users to download an app to claim fake "SBI rewards." PIB has posted an example of such a message on its social media platforms and urges users to remain cautious, avoid clicking on unsolicited links, and refrain from downloading unverified files.

PIB also emphasizes that SBI never shares such APK files (Android application files) or links via WhatsApp or SMS to claim rewards. The government agency urges people to fall for such deceptive scams and interact via message with unknown numbers even though they seem authentic they are phishing attempts being designed to retrieve customersโ€™ sensitive information.

In this screenshot, the PIB shares the text message shared via channels like WhatsApp, claiming customers have scored "SBI NetBanking Reward Points," mostly containing significant monetary value such as โ‚น18,000. The message warns users that their points will soon expire, creating a sense of urgency to prompt immediate action, while further instructing them to download the "SBI Reward" app to redeem these points. It also claims that the amount will be directly credited to their bank accounts.

Following the instructions, the users may download APK files or malicious software designed to steal personal information such as bank details, passwords, and other sensitive data. Cybersecurity experts advise online banking customers to follow these precautions to safeguard their sensitive information:

  • Never click a link sent from unknown numbers via WhatsApp or SMS

  • Download banking apps from trusted sources like Apple App Store or Google Play Store

  • Customers can get information about redeeming authentic SBI reward points by logging in to the official SBI Rewardz website: https://www.rewardz.sbi/ or by contacting the verified SBI Rewardz customer care number: 1800-209-8500.

  • Always confirm suspicious messages with banks or report to the cybercrime reporting portal of the government to trace the cybercriminals.
