Google has expanded its voluntary employee buyout programme to five countries as the technology giant looks to manage costs while increasing investments in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and capabilities. The programme, introduced in June, covers select employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland, according to media reports.

The move comes as Google parent Alphabet continues to commit significant resources to AI development, data centres and cloud computing. While these investments are central to the company's long-term growth strategy, the rising cost of building and operating AI infrastructure has placed greater emphasis on spending efficiency and workforce planning.

A Google spokesperson confirmed the international expansion of the programme, explaining that some teams introduced voluntary exit options with severance in 2025 before the initiative was extended to selected countries in June 2026.

The company has not disclosed how many employees have accepted the latest buyout offers.

Google Aligns Workforce with Strategic Priorities

The voluntary buyout programme gives eligible employees an option to leave the company with severance benefits. It follows similar initiatives introduced across selected Google divisions in the United States and the United Kingdom since last year.

The programme is part of Google's broader effort to align its workforce with changing business priorities. As AI becomes increasingly central to the company's products and services, Google is directing resources towards areas it considers important for future growth.

Employees who accepted the latest offers began leaving the company in August. Under the reported terms, eligible employees received one month's salary for every year of service, capped at 12 months' salary. The number of employees accepting the offer remains unclear, although one reported example involved at least four employees in a team of approximately 50.

AI and Cloud Computing Remain Key Priorities

Google's workforce restructuring reflects the growing importance of AI and cloud computing in its business strategy. The company is investing in AI models, computing infrastructure and services designed to strengthen its competitive position in an increasingly crowded market.

Google Cloud and its AI research division, DeepMind, were excluded from previous buyout offers, according to the report. In Switzerland, the programme covered multiple divisions but excluded DeepMind, reflecting the company's effort to retain employees in strategically important areas.

Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi has also identified AI and cloud computing as important hiring priorities during the company's earnings presentations.

These priorities illustrate how technology companies are reshaping workforce allocation rather than applying uniform reductions across every business unit.

Tech Industry Continues to Restructure

Google's latest programme comes amid wider workforce adjustments across the technology sector as companies balance rising AI expenditure with operational efficiency.

Microsoft has also introduced voluntary buyout offers as part of its efforts to manage its workforce and control costs. Such programmes provide companies with an alternative to compulsory redundancies, although their impact depends on employee participation and the roles affected.

For Google, the expanded initiative highlights the challenge of financing its AI ambitions while maintaining financial discipline. As competition intensifies in generative AI and cloud services, the company must balance investment in specialised talent and computing capacity with the need to control expenses elsewhere.

The number of employees affected by Google's latest programme remains undisclosed, leaving the overall workforce impact uncertain. However, the expansion signals that the company is continuing to adjust its organisational structure as AI reshapes its investment priorities and long-term business strategy.
