Elon Musk’s push to secure a dedicated chipmaking ecosystem for his technology businesses is moving into a new phase, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) now in discussions around his Terafab semiconductor project. Musk has confirmed that talks are taking place, although he stressed that they remain preliminary and have not yet resulted in a formal agreement.

The development adds another major semiconductor player to Musk’s plans to build large-scale chip manufacturing capacity in the US. With Tesla, SpaceX and xAI increasingly dependent on high-performance computing, the Terafab initiative is aimed at addressing the growing demand for specialised processors and AI infrastructure across Musk’s companies.

TSMC Talks Add Weight to Terafab Plans

Musk confirmed the discussions in a post on X, responding to reports about a potential TSMC-Terafab collaboration. He said they were “Just discussions, but something may come of it,” signalling that the companies have not yet reached a formal arrangement.

While acknowledging that talks are underway, he indicated that the companies have yet to reach a definitive arrangement.

The discussions are significant given TSMC’s position as one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers and its growing manufacturing presence in the US. Its potential involvement could give Terafab access to extensive chipmaking expertise and manufacturing capabilities, although the precise nature of any partnership has not been disclosed.

The development also comes as Intel has already been associated with the Terafab project, creating the possibility of multiple semiconductor industry players contributing to Musk’s broader chip strategy.

A Dedicated Chip Supply for Musk’s Companies

Terafab is being positioned differently from a conventional commercial foundry. The project is expected to focus on supplying chips for Musk’s own businesses, particularly Tesla, SpaceX and xAI, whose computing requirements are expanding rapidly.

Tesla requires increasingly powerful processors for its autonomous-driving ambitions and AI systems, while xAI is building large-scale computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence. SpaceX, meanwhile, has substantial computational requirements across its satellite and space operations.

Musk has previously outlined extremely ambitious plans for Terafab, including computing capacity on a scale intended to support the long-term requirements of his expanding AI ecosystem.

Texas at the Centre of the Strategy

The US state of Texas is emerging as an important base for Musk’s semiconductor ambitions. Terafab has been linked to a major manufacturing project in the state, with plans representing a multibillion-dollar investment and thousands of potential jobs.

The project reflects a broader push to establish greater semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the US while reducing dependence on overseas production for strategically important chips.

Partnership Still Taking Shape

Despite Musk’s confirmation, a potential TSMC partnership remains at the discussion stage. The companies have not disclosed whether TSMC would manufacture chips directly for Terafab, operate a facility, provide technology and expertise, or participate through another structure.

For Musk, however, the talks highlight the growing strategic importance of controlling access to advanced computing hardware. As Tesla, SpaceX and xAI expand their AI-intensive operations, Terafab could become an important component of Musk’s broader effort to build an integrated technology ecosystem spanning software, AI, computing and semiconductor manufacturing.
