How the Testing Was Conducted
Prowess Consulting designed the evaluation to closely reflect enterprise production environments. Logical unit numbers were provisioned on both storage platforms and presented to a VMware ESXi host. These LUNs were mapped to eight Linux-based virtual machines, with Vdbench used to generate controlled input/output workloads.
Both platforms were configured according to vendor-recommended best practices, using Fibre Channel connectivity to ensure optimal performance. Compression and deduplication were enabled on both systems to ensure parity. A 1.6 TB dataset was used to evaluate data reduction efficiency, while additional tests examined latency impact during snapshot creation and overall workload performance.

Snapshot Creation Without Latency Penalties
Snapshots are essential for data protection, but they should not compromise application performance. To evaluate this, Prowess Consulting measured the impact of snapshot creation on active workloads using a 50/50 read-write mix at 50,000 IOPS, while creating 10 rolling hourly snapshots.
The results were striking.
During snapshot creation, IBM FlashSystem 5300 exhibited latency spikes reaching 36.63 milliseconds, far exceeding acceptable thresholds for enterprise applications. In contrast, Dell PowerStore maintained latency at just 0.69 milliseconds, delivering up to 52 times lower latency under identical conditions.
This dramatic difference highlights PowerStore’s ability to protect data without disrupting mission-critical operations, a key requirement for always-on enterprise environments.

IBM FlashSystem achieved a data reduction ratio of 2.6:1.

PowerStore also supports up to 50,000 snapshots per system, compared to 15,863 snapshots on the IBM platform, enabling greater flexibility for data protection strategies.

To evaluate overall workload performance, Prowess Consulting tested small-write workloads, which are common in enterprise databases and transactional applications such as OLTP systems.
Under identical test conditions:
Dell PowerStore delivered 132,290 write IOPS at 0.96 milliseconds latency
IBM FlashSystem delivered 79,498 write IOPS at 1.60 milliseconds latency
This equates to 1.66 times higher write performance for Dell PowerStore, enabling faster transaction processing and improved responsiveness for business-critical applications.
