The breach notification website Have I Been Pwned has reported on the data breach of millions of American retail Hot Topic customers. The website sent notifications to 57 million customers of their personal data compromised on 19th October 2024.
“The impacted data also included physical addresses, phone numbers, purchases, genders, dates of birth and partial credit data containing card type, expiry and last 4 digits.”
Tech Crunch reported that according to HIBP, the breach was claimed by a threat actor known as “Satanic” on October 21. In a post on the cybercrime forum BreachForums, Satanic alleged to have stolen 350 million user records from Hot Topic and its affiliated brands, BoxLunch and Torrid.
Initially, the hacker attempted to trade the database for $20,000 and asked for $100,000 from HT to remove the information, as per the reports revealed by cybersecurity company Hudson Rock.
The nature of the cybersecurity breach is still unknown. Also, the cybersecurity firm suspects that the criminals have stolen personal data through infostealer malware to gain access to the analytics platform used by Hot Topic, enabling them to infiltrate the retailer’s cloud environment. Hot Topic, with over 640 stores across the U.S., has yet to confirm the breach.
