

OpenAI has introduced a new opt-in feature called Computer History in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, giving ChatGPT the ability to build a searchable record of how users interact with their computers.
Replacing the earlier experimental Chronicle feature, Computer History takes a different approach to understanding a user's activity. Instead of continuously capturing screenshots, it uses macOS accessibility features to record interaction events such as clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts and app switching.
The result is essentially a searchable timeline of a user's digital activity, allowing ChatGPT to understand what the user was doing across supported apps and websites and help them pick up where they left off.
ChatGPT Wants to Remember What You Did
Computer History is designed around a simple idea: users should not have to remember every document, website or task they worked on during the day.
Once enabled, the feature creates an interaction-event stream from selected apps and websites. OpenAI says these events are periodically converted into text summaries and local memory files, with the resulting activity timeline organised by date and time.
That means users could ask ChatGPT questions such as what they were working on earlier in the day, which document they were editing or where a particular conversation or file was encountered.
The feature can also identify patterns in a user's activity. Repetitive workflows could potentially be turned into one-click automations, moving ChatGPT beyond simply remembering activity toward helping users reproduce routine tasks.
No Screenshots, but It Still Knows What You Did
The biggest difference from Chronicle is how Computer History captures information. OpenAI says the new feature does not take screenshots or record the screen. It also does not capture microphone input or system audio. Instead, it relies on interaction events made available through macOS accessibility capabilities.
Private-mode browsing is excluded, while users can decide which apps and websites are included. A dedicated macOS menu bar control also allows users to quickly exclude an application from Computer History tracking. These controls are intended to give users greater control over what becomes part of their ChatGPT activity history.
The Privacy Question Is Bigger Than the Featureโs Opt-In Switch
While the feature is disabled by default and offers several controls, Computer History raises an important privacy question: how much of a user's digital life should an AI assistant be allowed to reconstruct?
The concern is not simply about screenshots or recordings. A sufficiently detailed stream of clicks, keystrokes, application switches and browsing activity can potentially reveal an enormous amount about someone's workday.
A document may not need to be photographed for an AI system to understand that a user opened it, edited it, copied information from another application and then sent it somewhere else.
That makes the resulting activity history potentially sensitive even without traditional screen recording. There is another issue worth considering: the generated summaries and memory files are stored locally on the Mac. If sensitive activity is being transformed into readable local information, protecting those files becomes an important part of the overall security picture.
In other words, the privacy conversation surrounding Computer History is not just about what OpenAI collects. It is also about what information is reconstructed, where that information is stored and which other software running under the same user account could potentially access it.
Who Can Use Computer History?
Access is currently limited to ChatGPT Pro, Business and Enterprise users, with Business and Enterprise deployments requiring administrator approval before individual employees can enable the feature.
Availability is also geographically restricted, with the feature currently unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK, and limited to users in the US.
For organisations, this could make Computer History particularly interesting โ and potentially complicated. The same capability that could help employees resume tasks and automate repetitive workflows could also create new questions around corporate data, employee privacy and acceptable monitoring practices.
Should You Turn It On?
For users who frequently jump between documents, browsers, applications and conversations, Computer History could become a genuinely useful productivity feature.
Instead of asking, "Where did I see that file?" or "What was I doing before lunch?", users could potentially ask ChatGPT and let their recent activity provide the answer.
But the convenience comes with a clear trade-off.
Computer History is essentially asking users to give an AI system a much deeper understanding of their digital behaviour. Even with opt-in controls and exclusions, users should consider carefully which applications they allow it to monitor.
A sensible approach would be to start small โ enable Computer History for low-sensitivity applications, review the information it creates locally and understand exactly what is being remembered before expanding access.
