Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5.5, the latest addition to its Claude 5.5 family, with a stronger focus on agentic AI, advanced coding, computer use, knowledge work and AI safety. The new model is designed to handle complex, multi-step tasks while improving response speed and reducing the cost of running advanced AI workloads.
Claude Opus 5.5 is positioned as a more capable and efficient model for developers and businesses using AI for software development, automation and other knowledge-intensive applications. The launch also marks the first release in Anthropic's new Claude 5.5 model family.
Stronger Coding and Agentic AI Capabilities
Coding is one of the key areas targeted by Claude Opus 5.5. The model is designed to work with large codebases and manage extended software development tasks that require multiple steps, from understanding existing code to identifying issues and implementing changes.
The model also focuses on agentic AI, allowing AI systems to perform sequences of actions rather than simply respond to individual prompts. This can support workflows where an AI agent needs to reason through a task, use computer tools and continue working across multiple stages.
Anthropic has reported improved performance on benchmarks covering agentic coding and computer use. The model achieved a 66.4% score on Terminal-Bench 4.0, an evaluation focused on coding tasks performed by AI agents. It also recorded an 81.8% partial score on OSWorld 2.0, which evaluates an AI model's ability to interact with computers and complete tasks.
Focus on Computer Use and Knowledge Work
Claude Opus 5.5 also brings improvements in computer-use capabilities. This allows the model to interact with software environments and perform tasks that would traditionally require users to navigate applications manually.
These capabilities could have applications across software development, research, data analysis, business operations and other knowledge-based workflows. The broader objective is to enable AI agents to take on longer and more complicated tasks while requiring less step-by-step human direction.
Anthropic has also highlighted improvements in knowledge work and communication, with the model designed to provide clearer outputs during longer interactions and complex workflows.
Lower Costs and Faster Performance
Cost efficiency is another major focus of Claude Opus 5.5. The model is priced at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, compared with $5 and $25 respectively for Claude Opus 5.
Anthropic has indicated that the new model can deliver output more than 30% faster than its predecessor. The combination of lower token pricing, faster performance and improved efficiency is expected to reduce the cost of running longer AI tasks.
For developers and enterprises, lower operating costs could become increasingly important as AI agents move from experimentation to larger-scale deployment.
Safety Remains a Key Focus
Anthropic has also placed emphasis on safety with the new model. Claude Opus 5.5 has been evaluated across areas including cybersecurity, biology and model-related risks, with additional safeguards designed for higher-risk applications.
The company has reported improvements in its automated behavioural safety evaluations and has expanded controlled-access programmes for certain high-risk use cases.
Claude Opus 5.5 is the first model in Anthropic's Claude 5.5 family, with additional versions expected to follow. The launch reflects the broader shift in the AI industry towards models that combine stronger reasoning, coding and computer-use capabilities with greater efficiency and safety for real-world deployment.
