Elon Musk has made one of his most aggressive economic predictions yet, forecasting that the combination of artificial intelligence and humanoid robots could more than double the size of the global economy in less than a decade.

Musk shared the prediction on September 9, building on remarks he made just a week earlier at a G20-related meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. His latest forecast goes significantly beyond his earlier estimate that advanced AI alone could increase global GDP by 20% to 30%.

“AI + robots will more than double the size of the global economy in less than 10 years,” Musk said in a social media post.

The billionaire entrepreneur believes the real economic acceleration will come when AI moves beyond digital tasks and becomes the intelligence powering machines capable of performing physical work.

From 30% GDP Growth to a Potential 100%+ Surge

On September 2, Musk estimated that AI could eventually add around $20 trillion to $30 trillion to annual global economic output, equivalent to a 20%–30% increase in the size of the world economy.

But his latest projection introduces another potentially transformative factor: humanoid robots operating at massive scale.

Musk has suggested that as many as one billion humanoid robots could be deployed worldwide within the next 10 years. He has also argued that a single robot could potentially produce several times the output of a human worker.

If that vision materialises, the impact would extend far beyond the technology sector. Manufacturing, logistics, construction, warehousing, healthcare and other labour-intensive industries could undergo a fundamental shift as AI-driven machines take on an increasing share of physical work.

The AI Economy Could Become a Robot Economy

The significance of Musk's prediction lies in the combination of two technologies. AI can provide the intelligence needed to understand, plan and make decisions, while humanoid robots could translate that intelligence into action in the physical world.

This could create an entirely new automation cycle, where machines are not simply assisting workers but increasingly performing complete tasks with limited human intervention.

Musk has separately predicted that AI could have a major impact on digital jobs as early as 2027, potentially pushing humans toward higher-level decision-making and oversight.

However, doubling the global economy in less than 10 years remains an extremely ambitious scenario, not an established economic forecast. The pace of AI development, robot production costs, energy availability, infrastructure, regulation and real-world adoption will determine whether such productivity gains can actually be achieved.

Still, Musk's latest forecast highlights the scale of the transformation he expects: AI could provide the brains, humanoid robots the workforce, and together they could reshape the global economy at a scale rarely seen before.
