At the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, made an inspiring call for collaboration between telecom and satellite companies throughout the conference. In his keynote address, the industry veteran urged both sectors to come together and combine their strengths to bridge the connectivity gap in remote areas. He emphasized the need to “complete the mission of connecting the unconnected, covering the oceans and the skies as well as difficult-to-reach areas.”
The message he delivered was aimed at bringing these industries together and overcoming the challenges of global connectivity, especially in remote regions where penetrating traditional infrastructure is still a challenge before the IT industry. The response has been immediate and significant, with two significant partnerships being announced between telecom operators Reliance Jio and Airtel with satellite company SpaceX in the wake of the conference.
The founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises made a similar push for collaboration at the 2017 Mobile World Congress, where he advocated for the reduction of roaming charges, a barrier preventing customers from using their home networks abroad and forcing them to look out for local SIMs or Wi-Fi hotspots for connectivity. The telecom industry acted immediately and reduced international roaming rates, causing a surge in global network usage. Today, roaming tariffs are available at affordable costs, and international connectivity is a given for most customers.

The Airtel owner is assured that the satellite and telecom industries will respond similarly to the current call for cooperation. By integrating satellite technology into the telecom sector to the addition of new network technologies, such as 4G, 5G, and eventually 6G.
