SoftBank's Japanese telecom unit is set to receive the first Nvidia chips featuring the latest Blackwell design for its supercomputer, announced Nvidia at a Tokyo event on Wednesday featuring Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and SoftBank Group CEO Son, as reported by Reuters. The firm also plans to utilize the Grace Blackwell chips for a further computer. This move aligns with Masayoshi Sonโs strategy to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom.
"Every other telco will have to follow this new wave," said Masayoshi Son CEO of SoftBank Group while speaking to Jensen Huang CEO of Nvidia.
Huang announced that SoftBank is the first recipient of Nvidia's latest Blackwell chip designs. The chips will be integrated into its AI supercomputer to develop an in-house generative AI model.
The companies stated that the network can simultaneously handle 5G and AI workloads concurrently, which is a capacity known as an artificial intelligence radio access network (AI-RAN). The application network includes remote support for autonomous vehicles and robotics control.
The two businessmen were participating in a "fireside chat" at the event when Jensen recalled Son had once offered him to buy Nvidia when its value was not estimated by the market.
"He wanted to lend me money to buy Nvidia. All of it. Now I regret not taking it," Huang revealed, laughing.
Further, Son stated that the offer was proposed the following month after acquiring chip designer Arm. Later, the Japanese billionaire built and merchandised a stake in Nvidia and dealt for Arm to Nvidia which fell on regulatory hurdles.
