Sandisk is strengthening its India operations with an annual research and development investment of around $200 million, expanding the country’s role in its global product development network. The company has invested nearly $2 billion in India over the past decade, with its local teams increasingly involved in product architecture, design and low-volume manufacturing.

According to media reports, Sandisk’s India operations have become an important centre for the development of flash memory and SSD products. The company’s engineering teams contribute to multiple stages of product development before products move to larger-scale manufacturing facilities.

India Becomes Key R&D Hub

Sandisk has around 3,000 engineers in India, compared with approximately 7,000–8,000 engineers globally. This means India accounts for roughly 25–30% of its global engineering workforce.

The India centre works on SSDs for laptops and other storage products, while enterprise solutions are developed through teams in India and other global locations. Around 60–70% of Sandisk’s products are estimated to be developed or built through its India operations.

This growing R&D contribution highlights India’s expanding role in the global semiconductor and storage ecosystem, where engineering, product design and technology development are becoming increasingly important alongside manufacturing.

AI Drives New Memory Demand

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence and data-centre infrastructure is reshaping the global memory market. AI workloads require large volumes of memory and storage, increasing demand from cloud providers and enterprise customers.

The stronger demand is also affecting pricing and supply allocation across the market. AI customers are increasingly willing to absorb higher memory costs, creating supply pressure for consumer segments such as smartphones and PCs.

Sandisk reported $8.97 billion in fiscal Q4 2026 revenue, up 372% year-on-year and 51% sequentially. According to available reports, around two-thirds of the growth came from higher pricing, while the remaining growth was driven by increased volumes.

PC manufacturers are also facing higher component costs, with suppliers increasingly concentrating on mid-range and premium systems as lower-end products become more difficult to maintain at competitive prices.

Focus on Supply Chain Efficiency

Sandisk is working on product designs that can operate with a smaller DDR memory footprint while securing supplies to manage ongoing component constraints. Such engineering efforts could help the company address supply-chain challenges as demand continues to increase across AI infrastructure, enterprise systems and consumer electronics.

Push for IT Equipment Manufacturing

Sandisk is also calling for greater attention to India’s broader IT equipment manufacturing ecosystem, including laptops, servers, peripherals and components. A stronger domestic market for complete IT systems could encourage manufacturers to source more components locally, creating opportunities for memory and SSD companies to expand manufacturing activities in India.

At present, Sandisk does not have a proposal under the government’s semiconductor programme because its customers are not mandating local manufacturing. The company’s India strategy also highlights the opportunity to expand semiconductor policy beyond chip fabrication towards components, IT equipment, server manufacturing and R&D.

With its growing engineering workforce and significant annual R&D investment, Sandisk is positioning India as an increasingly important part of its global technology and product development strategy.
