In a landmark development for India’s semiconductor ambitions, Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging facility of Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt Ltd in Sanand, Gujarat.

The inauguration marks a historic milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey, with commercial production and shipment of the first Made in India semiconductor memory modules set to commence from this facility.

A Defining Step in India’s Semiconductor Vision

The Sanand ATMP facility represents a major advancement in strengthening India’s role within the global semiconductor value chain. It is the first proposal approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, reinforcing the government’s commitment to accelerating strategic semiconductor investments.

With a total project outlay exceeding ₹22,500 crore, construction began soon after the ground-breaking ceremony held in September 2023, demonstrating the fast-track execution model adopted for this nationally significant initiative.

Emphasizing the historic nature of the moment and the scale of investment behind the project, Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology said, “Today is not just an inauguration; it is a moment in history. We are celebrating something that has never been built here before, the pioneering advanced semiconductor assembly and test facility in India. Micron is proud to lead the way in making this vision a reality. Under the visionary leadership of Narendra Modi, the India Semiconductor Mission is bold and clear: to build a trusted, world class semiconductor ecosystem in India.”

He further stated, “Empowered by this vision and strengthened by the unwavering support of the government, we broke ground at this site in 2023 with a planned investment of 2.75 billion dollars. This facility will transform advanced DRAM and NAND wafers into millions of chips annually, which will power finished products for customers around the world.”

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, PM Narendra Modi stated, “Once known primarily for software, India is now firmly establishing its strength in hardware as well. The commencement of commercial production at Micron’s ATMP facility will significantly enhance India’s position in the global technology value chain. India is steadily emerging as a vital force in the global semiconductor ecosystem.”

PM further added, “I extend my congratulations to Micron, the Government of Gujarat, and to all the engineers, technicians and workers who have made this possible. The semiconductor ecosystem we are building is not restricted to one place, it is pan-India. The new tech hubs of Viksit Bharat are being built in every corner of the country. Work on semiconductor unit was initiated in Noida a few days ago and it has also been started in Assam, Odisha and Punjab. India's message to the world is - India is ready!”

During the inauguration, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Today is a historic day. The semiconductor industry is a foundational industry, and with this manufacturing facility, India has firmly marked its place on the global semiconductor map. India already has a strong semiconductor ecosystem, and it is evolving at a rapid pace. Global technology leaders are beginning the manufacturing of advanced 2 nanometer chips in India. In the coming years, the entire semiconductor ecosystem will steadily expand within the country.”

One of the World’s Largest Raised-Floor Cleanrooms

Once fully ramped up, the Sanand facility will feature approximately 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, making it one of the world’s largest raised-floor cleanroom environments. The advanced infrastructure is designed to meet global standards and serve customers across international markets.

The plant will convert advanced DRAM and NAND semiconductor wafers sourced from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products. These solutions are expected to cater to rising global demand driven by Artificial Intelligence workloads, high-performance computing applications, data centers, and next-generation digital infrastructure.

Strengthening India’s Position in the Global Semiconductor Ecosystem

The commencement of commercial production and shipment from the Sanand ATMP facility signals India’s emergence as a trusted destination for semiconductor manufacturing. It aligns with the broader national vision of building a resilient, self-reliant, and globally competitive technology ecosystem.

Further details, including official statements from company leadership and government dignitaries, will be updated following the completion of the inauguration ceremony.
