Micron Technology is showcasing its growing semiconductor footprint in India at SEMICON India 2026, being held from September 17-19 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. The event has brought together semiconductor companies, policymakers, technology leaders and ecosystem partners as India accelerates its transition from semiconductor ambition to commercial execution.

During the inaugural session, Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO, Micron Technology, highlighted India's progress in building a semiconductor ecosystem and underlined the importance of continued policy support, industry collaboration and talent development. He noted that India is increasingly moving from discussing semiconductor potential to delivering products and building manufacturing capabilities.

Sanand Facility Marks Major Manufacturing Milestone

A key part of Micron's India strategy is its semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, which became commercially operational earlier this year. The facility converts advanced DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron's global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products.

The Sanand project represents a combined investment of approximately $2.75 billion by Micron and government partners, with Micron's own investment planned at up to $825 million across two phases. The company expects the facility to assemble and test tens of millions of chips in 2026, with production projected to scale to hundreds of millions in 2027.

Micron has also begun shipping DRAM and NAND products from Sanand, adding a commercial manufacturing and export dimension to its India operations.

Expanding Design, Engineering and Talent Capabilities

Micron's India presence extends beyond manufacturing. The company operates engineering and design teams in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, while its current India footprint also includes the Sanand manufacturing operations. Micron's India teams contribute to product and technology development, including work supporting advanced memory technologies.

Talent development is another focus area. Micron has established collaborations with universities through initiatives such as the University Research Alliance of Micron (URAM) and supports STEM education, specialised semiconductor training and workforce readiness programmes. The company had previously outlined plans to expand its India employee footprint significantly as its operations grew.

AI Drives Next Phase of Memory Growth

Micron's expansion comes as the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence increases demand for high-performance memory and storage. AI workloads require significant memory bandwidth, capacity and energy efficiency, making memory technologies increasingly important to data centres, AI systems and next-generation computing platforms.

Against this backdrop, SEMICON India 2026 provides Micron with an opportunity to highlight how its India operations are becoming part of the company's broader global memory and storage ecosystem. With commercial production now underway at Sanand and engineering capabilities expanding across Bengaluru and Hyderabad, Micron is positioning India as an increasingly important part of its long-term semiconductor strategy.
