Lenovo is ramping up its operations with plans to manufacture GPU-based servers and PCs in its Puducherry plant in India. This move aligns with India's "Make in India" initiative and Lenovo's strategy to create a ‘high-performance AI server manufacturing’ hub and also serve as an export base in the international market for Lenovo products.
The Puducherry plant is poised to manufacture five key offerings of the company’s portfolio, incorporating ‘three rack-mounted enterprise AI servers and two flagship 8-way GPU servers.’ These state-of-the-art technologies are estimated to serve as a key driver for Lenovo’s growth in Indian business.
Ashish Sikka, Director of PCSD Category took professional networking website LinkedIn to comment on the announcement, “Our commitment to India as both a key market and manufacturing hub continues to grow stronger every day. In addition to producing the iconic ThinkPad and ThinkCentre brands, the Lenovo Puducherry plant will now also manufacture GPU-based servers.”
In addition, Lenovo plans to manufacture approximately 50,000 AI rack servers and 2,400 GPU servers annually, meeting both local and international demands. This initiative reflects Lenovo's broader ambition to enhance its global manufacturing and R&D capabilities while contributing to India's growing AI and cloud computing infrastructure. These servers will feature ‘Lenovo’s advanced 8-way GPU architecture,’ to address the ever-increasing AI infrastructure demands, delivering more than 60% of the manufacturing meant for export in the Asia-Pacific region.
“This development marks a significant step toward achieving both Lenovo’s and the Indian government’s ‘AI for All’ vision. We remain committed to driving India’s growth as an innovation hub by expanding our global manufacturing footprint and harnessing the strength of Indian talent and the industry ecosystem for technology R&D,” said Amar Babu, President of Asia Pacific, Lenovo.
In a streak of inflating its manufacturing footprint in India, the PC manufacturer firm Lenovo also introduced a ‘new Infrastructure R&D Lab’ in the Silicon Valley of Bengaluru, India, adding another name to its 18 R&D Labs running globally. The Bengaluru R&D facility is among its four critical labs globally with a prime focus on Infrastructure Solutions, development centers, and joining server design in Morrisville, Taipei, and Beijing.
This lab will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and testing advanced server platforms, encompassing hardware, firmware, and software components. It will serve as a hub for innovation, supporting the creation of next-generation systems tailored to meet evolving technological demands.
“Our commitment to developing local talent and supporting India’s tech economy is long-term. With today’s announcement of AI server manufacturing in India, we complete Lenovo’s pocket-to-cloud technologies ‘Made in India’ for the world. The Infrastructure R&D Lab’s focus on designing and developing next-generation mainstream servers further underscores Lenovo’s dedication to ‘R&D in India for the world’,” said Shailendra Katyal, Managing Director, Lenovo India.
“As we enter the AI decade, these investments are critical to delivering best-in-class AI infrastructure and Large Language Model solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. We are excited about the growth potential this brings, not just for Lenovo, but for India as a global innovation hub,” said Amit Luthra, Managing Director, Lenovo ISG India.
The larger investment plans in the fields of Infrastructure R&D Lab and AI server production in India reflect Lenovo’s broader strategy to pioneer the intelligent transformation era with “smarter AI for all” offer and contribute to the economic and technological growth of India.
