Chris Hyams, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Indeed, has announced his decision to step down after nearly 15 years at the forefront of the world’s largest job site. Hisayuki “Deko” Idekoba, who previously served as Indeed’s CEO from 2013 to 2019, has returned to the role.
Chris Hyams joined Indeed in October 2010 as Vice President of Product, tasked with overseeing technology strategy and innovation at a pivotal time when the company had just 130 employees and 20 million monthly unique visitors. Over the years, Chris played a vital role in scaling Indeed’s mission to help people get jobs, rising to President in 2015 and then CEO in April 2019.
Under Chris’s leadership, Indeed has grown exponentially. Today, the platform serves over 300 million job seekers every month, with a staggering 27 hires made every minute through Indeed’s network. Since the company began measuring hires, more than 75 million people worldwide have found jobs via Indeed — a number believed to be a significant undercount.
In his own words, Chris shared with the Indeed team, “Indeed has been the most meaningful work of my life—and choosing to leave has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve had the incredible privilege of working side by side with people who care deeply about each other, and about our mission to help people get jobs. Together, we have helped millions of people make better lives for themselves, for their families, and for their communities.”
“At this moment in history, that means devoting myself to a few urgent issues ensuring that all technology—not just Indeed—is built with humanity at its core. This includes advancing Responsible AI, countering disinformation, empowering workers, defending human rights, and bridging the gap between technology and the humanities.”
Chris’s journey to CEO was preceded by a diverse and dynamic career. Before Indeed, he founded B-Side, a technology platform focused on independent film analytics, marketing, and distribution. He also served as Vice President of Engineering at Trilogy Software. Academically, Chris holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Rice University and an A.B. in Architecture from Princeton University, underscoring his broad, interdisciplinary perspective.
Looking ahead, Chris will remain an advisor on Indeed’s board through the end of 2025 to support a smooth leadership transition as the company prepares to launch what he calls “the most profound innovation in Indeed’s history”: an agentic AI platform designed to serve as a personal talent agent for workers and a talent scout for employers worldwide.
Chris concluded his farewell with deep gratitude, “I’m deeply grateful to our founders Rony Kahan and Paul Forster for their vision, and for inviting me on this journey. Most importantly, I am grateful to all of you, along with the hundreds of millions of job seekers and employers who have come together on Indeed to create a better world of work.”
I am grateful to our founders, the executive team, and all Indeed employees whose dedication to job seekers drives every decision. And most importantly, to the hundreds of millions of job seekers and employers who have come together on Indeed to create a better world of work.”
As Indeed embarks on this new chapter, the mission remains as vital as ever: helping people find meaningful work, empowering communities, and reshaping the future of employment.
