In the year 2020, WhatsApp witnessed a tremendous surge in the calls made on New Year’s Eve. Total 1.4 billion voice and video calls were made which broke all previous records.
WhatsApp has understood the increasing popularity of WhatsApp calling so to provide more flexibility to its users, WhatsApp has launched voice and video calling feature for the web.
WhatsApp calling on the web will be accessible only when the users will install the desktop app. The free desktop calling will be available on both Windows and Mac as well. Desktop calling will be supported on Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 or newer and macOS 10.13 and newer versions.

To make desktop calling more useful, WhatsApp has made sure it works seamlessly for both portrait and landscape orientation appears in a resizable standalone window on your computer screen and is set to be always on top so the users never lose their video chats in a browser tab or stack of open windows.
How to make desktop voice/video calls
To make or receive calls on WhatsApp Desktop, the users will need to grant WhatsApp permission to access their computer’s microphone and camera. WhatsApp needs access to your computer's microphone for calls and a camera for video calls.
Voice and video calls on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp can’t hear or see them, whether the users call from their phone or computer. Currently, WhatsApp has rolled out the web calling feature for one-to-one calls. “The group voice and video calling feature will be rolled out soon” stated WhatsApp.
