The initiative is designed to help listeners distinguish genuine human artists from AI-generated or impersonated profiles, as streaming platforms face a growing wave of synthetic music content.
The development comes at a time when the global music ecosystem is increasingly grappling with questions of originality, ownership, and transparency, driven by rapid advances in AI music generation tools.
New verification framework
Under the updated system, Spotify will award the verification badge to artists who demonstrate credible and consistent activity beyond streaming metrics alone. The evaluation will consider indicators of real-world presence, including live performances, merchandise availability, and active social media engagement linked to official artist profiles.
A key component of the framework is sustained audience engagement. Rather than rewarding short-term spikes in popularity, Spotify will prioritise artists who show steady and long-term listener traction across the platform.
According to the company, more than 99 percent of artists commonly searched by users are expected to qualify for the badge at launch. A large proportion of these are independent musicians representing a wide range of genres, geographies, and career stages, highlighting Spotify’s emphasis on inclusivity within its verification approach.
The badge itself will appear as a green check mark alongside the “Verified by Spotify” label on artist profiles and in search results. The rollout will be gradual over the coming weeks due to the platform’s scale. Importantly, Spotify has clarified that not having a badge does not automatically indicate ineligibility.
AI-generated and functional music content deprioritised
The verification system explicitly excludes profiles primarily built around AI-generated music or virtual artist personas. In addition, Spotify is also deprioritising so-called “functional music” creators, including algorithmically generated ambient or background tracks designed mainly for passive listening environments.
This move signals a sharper policy direction as streaming services attempt to maintain catalog quality and reinforce the distinction between human creativity and machine-generated output.
New tools to enhance artist transparency and identity
Alongside the verification badge, Spotify is rolling out a new profile enhancement feature currently in beta. This section will showcase key artist milestones, release histories, and touring activity, offering listeners a clearer view of an artist’s professional journey even in cases where verification status is still pending.
The platform has also recently introduced “Artist Profile Protection,” a feature that allows musicians to review and approve content before it is published under their name. This is aimed at reducing cases of impersonation and unauthorized uploads.
Industry-wide concerns over AI misuse continue to rise
Spotify’s latest measures reflect broader concerns across the global music industry about the misuse of AI in content creation. Earlier, Sony Music Entertainment reportedly moved to remove more than 135,000 AI-generated tracks that were found to be impersonating its artists across streaming platforms.
Similarly, Deezer has highlighted the scale of the challenge, revealing that nearly 44 percent of new daily uploads on its platform are now AI-generated content.
