A 75-year-old homeowner in Wisconsin has rejected a $131,000 compensation offer from American Transmission Company (ATC) over a proposed electricity transmission line intended to supply power to a planned data centre in Port Washington.

Jerry Zelenka, who has owned the property in Fredonia with his wife since 1990, is opposing the proposed route, which he says would significantly alter the land they have maintained for decades.

Proposed Project Could Remove Trees and Six Buildings

According to the proposal, the transmission line would require the removal of mature trees, the demolition of six buildings and the installation of a 130-foot transmission tower near the coupleโ€™s driveway.

Although the plan would leave their house standing, Zelenka believes the project would take away a substantial part of the property they have developed and cared for over the years.

ATC Offers Compensation to Secure Agreement

The compensation package reportedly includes $81,000 for the impact on the property, along with an additional one-time payment of $50,000 if the homeowner agrees to the proposal immediately.

However, Zelenka has declined the offer, highlighting the concerns surrounding the project's impact on his property and its existing structures.

Data Centre Power Demand Raises Local Concerns

The dispute highlights the challenges that can emerge as data centre development increases demand for electricity and supporting transmission infrastructure. While these facilities require substantial power infrastructure, the routes selected for new transmission lines can affect homeowners, trees and existing buildings.

The proposed connection to the Port Washington data centre has therefore become a point of contention for the Wisconsin homeowner, whose decision reflects concerns about the long-term impact on his property.

The final outcome will depend on how the project proceeds and whether an agreement can be reached over the proposed transmission route and compensation.
