Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the much-anticipated Noida International Airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure expansion. The new airport, located in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, becomes the second international airport serving the Delhi-NCR region, alongside the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi.

The Jewar airport is expected to play a crucial role in easing the growing passenger and cargo traffic burden on IGI Airport, which has consistently ranked among the busiest airports in the world. Developed in phases, the Noida International Airport is designed to eventually handle millions of passengers annually, with state-of-the-art facilities and a focus on sustainability and efficiency.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the project as part of India’s broader push to modernize infrastructure and improve connectivity. He said the airport would “open new avenues of growth for western Uttar Pradesh” and strengthen India’s aviation network.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the airport as a “transformational project,” adding that it would boost investment, generate employment, and position the state as a global business destination.

The Noida International Airport project has been developed with a focus on modern design and environmental sustainability. Authorities have indicated that the airport will incorporate green technologies, including energy-efficient systems and sustainable construction practices. Once fully operational, it is expected to become one of Asia’s largest airports.

In its initial phase, the airport is set to handle a substantial number of passengers annually, with expansion plans already outlined to increase capacity in the coming years. Improved road and rail connectivity, including expressways and metro links, are also being developed to ensure seamless access for travelers from across the NCR and neighboring states.

Industry experts view the airport as a strategic addition to India’s aviation network, especially at a time when domestic and international air travel demand continues to rise. By decongesting IGI Airport and providing an alternative hub, the Jewar facility is expected to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience across the region.

Key Highlights

  • Area & Scale: Spread across a vast area in Jewar, Gautam Buddh Nagar, the airport is being developed in multiple phases and is expected to become one of Asia’s largest aviation hubs.

  • Runway & Aviation Capacity: The airport includes a 3,900-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300ER, along with advanced navigation systems like Instrument Landing System (ILS) and modern airfield lighting.

  • Eco-Friendly Infrastructure: Designed with sustainability in mind, the airport features natural light and ventilation, rainwater harvesting systems, and plans to use renewable energy in line with a net-zero emissions target.

  • Cargo & Logistics Hub: A total of 87 acres has been set aside for a multi-modal cargo hub, including a cargo terminal, warehouses, and a logistics zone, boosting trade and supply chain efficiency.

  • Passenger & Terminal Facilities: Around 30 acres will be used for domestic, international, and express courier terminals, ensuring smooth passenger flow and modern in-house airport services.

The Noida International Airport at Jewar is poised to become a game-changer for the Delhi-NCR region and northern India, significantly enhancing connectivity, reducing congestion at IGI Airport, and driving economic growth across Uttar Pradesh. While the inauguration marks a major milestone, full-fledged commercial operations are expected to roll out in phases, with initial flight services likely to begin soon after final regulatory clearances and operational readiness are completed.

The airport’s complete expansion, however, will take shape over the coming years, ultimately transforming it into one of the country’s largest and most important aviation hubs.
