Residents of Kantilo in Nayagarh district's Khandapada block have finally received relief after a tusker that had been moving through forests and nearby villages for nearly a month left the area. However, the elephant's departure was anything but ordinary, as it ended up being carried nearly 50 kilometres downstream by the swollen Mahanadi River.
According to the Forest Department, the elephant entered the river after reportedly becoming frightened by the large gathering of devotees and loud noise during the Bol Bam pilgrimage. The strong current then carried the animal downstream towards Bhattarika forest area in Cuttack district.
Elephant Had Been Roaming Near Villages
Officials said the tusker had wandered into the forests around Kantilo after moving away from the Satkosia landscape in Angul district. For several weeks, its presence near villages had caused concern among local residents.
The elephant was reportedly spotted on Sunday evening in the Nuagaon forest under Bad Banpur Gram Panchayat, prompting forest officials to keep a close watch on its movement.
Strong River Current Carries Tusker Downstream
The situation took an unexpected turn when the elephant entered the Mahanadi. The river was swollen and flowing rapidly, allowing the current to carry the animal a considerable distance downstream.
The tusker eventually reached the Bhattarika forest area in Cuttack district, around 50 kilometres from the location where it entered the river.
Forest Officials Monitor the Animal
The unusual incident has highlighted the challenges faced when wild elephants move through areas inhabited by people. Forest officials have been tracking the tusker's movements to ensure that it does not enter densely populated areas or come into conflict with local communities.
The elephant's movement also underlines the importance of managing large gatherings and human activity near wildlife habitats, particularly during periods when animals are already moving outside their usual forest ranges.
For residents of Kantilo, the tusker's departure has brought much-needed relief after weeks of anxiety. Attention now remains on ensuring the elephant's safe movement through the forest landscape without further human-wildlife conflict.
