The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued fresh guidelines on the National Anthem, National Song, State Songs, and foreign national anthems, clarifying when people are expected to stand during the playing of the National Anthem.

When Should People Stand?

According to the MHA's updated directions:

  • Citizens should stand at attention whenever the National Anthem is played.

  • The protocol is aimed at ensuring respect and dignity for the National Anthem during official ceremonies and public events.

Exception for Films and Documentaries

The ministry has clarified that people are not expected to stand if the National Anthem is played as part of a film, documentary, or newsreel.

The guidelines state that asking viewers to stand in such situations could:

  • Disrupt the screening of the film or documentary.

  • Create confusion and disorder in the auditorium.

  • Not necessarily enhance the dignity of the National Anthem.

Comprehensive Guidelines Issued

The new directions also provide guidance on:

  • The National Anthem

  • The National Song

  • State Songs

  • Foreign national anthems

  • Protocols for collective singing during official functions and public events

The objective is to ensure uniform observance and maintain the dignity of national symbols while providing clarity on different situations in which they are played.
