Protests at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, escalated into violence after students demonstrated over allegations involving the rape of a female student on campus. The unrest saw clashes with police, damage to property and vehicles, and disruption on National Highway-44.
Student Protest Escalates
The demonstration began after claims circulated among students that an outsider had allegedly raped a female student on the university campus. As the protest intensified, students reportedly blocked NH-44 and vandalised property.
The situation later deteriorated into clashes between protesting students and police personnel. Vehicles were damaged and set on fire, while stones were reportedly thrown at security forces. Several policemen sustained injuries during the confrontation.
University Suspends Classes
In response to the unrest, LPU announced the suspension of regular classes for 10 days starting September 28. The university has also postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice.
The administration has appealed to students to remain calm, follow official instructions and monitor university communications for further updates.
Talks Fail to Resolve Protest
Several rounds of discussions between representatives of the protesting students and the university management have taken place, but the talks have so far failed to reach a conclusion.
Heavy police deployment has been put in place following the violence as authorities work to maintain law and order around the university and affected areas.
