India and Indonesia have taken a significant step towards strengthening their strategic defence partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jakarta, signing two agreements expressing intent to procure India's advanced missile systems.

The agreements cover the proposed acquisition of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, marking a major milestone in defence cooperation between the two nations.

Indonesia Plans to Buy BrahMos and Astra Missiles

According to reports, Indonesia intends to procure around $200 million worth of BrahMos missiles from India.

The agreements include:

  • BrahMos supersonic surface-to-surface and air-launched missile with a range of approximately 300 km

  • Astra beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile with a range exceeding 100 km

While the BrahMos deal is expected to be valued at around $200 million, the number of Astra missiles to be procured will be finalized during subsequent negotiations.

Sabang Port to Be Jointly Developed

Beyond defence, India and Indonesia have also agreed to jointly develop the Sabang-Aceh Port, located near the entrance of the strategically vital Malacca Strait.

The port lies just 160 km from India's Great Nicobar Project, which includes the planned transshipment hub at Campbell Bay.

Strategic Importance of the Malacca Strait

The Malacca Strait is one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes, with:

  • More than 23 million barrels of oil passing through daily.

  • An estimated $3โ€“7 trillion worth of global trade transiting the waterway annually.

The development of Sabang Port is expected to enhance maritime security, improve regional connectivity, and strengthen cooperation in safeguarding one of the world's most critical shipping lanes against both state and non-state threats.

Deepening India-Indonesia Strategic Ties

The defence agreements and infrastructure collaboration reflect the growing strategic partnership between India and Indonesia under the broader vision of a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific.

If finalized, Indonesia would join the growing list of countries acquiring India's indigenous defence systems, further boosting India's defence exports and strengthening bilateral security cooperation.
