IIT Bombay has begun seeking student feedback on alternatives to ceiling-mounted fans in hostel rooms as part of a broader review of student safety, comfort and hostel living conditions. The move comes after the suicide of a student on September 18, which was followed by protests on the campus.
Institute Opens Survey on Fan Options
The institute has circulated a feedback form asking students to share their preferences regarding the type, number and placement of fans that could be used in hostel rooms.
According to the survey, the exercise is intended to help the institute assess practical configurations that can address studentsโ comfort and safety requirements.
Students have been given several options, including wall-mounted, pedestal, table or desk and tower fans. They can also indicate that they would prefer to continue with the existing ceiling-mounted fan.
Multiple Configurations Under Consideration
The survey allows students to choose from different combinations of fan arrangements. These include options such as two wall-mounted fans, a combination of a wall-mounted and table fan, or two table fans.
Students are also asked to identify the primary reason behind their preference. Factors listed in the survey include air circulation, cooling while studying or sleeping, efficient use of space, convenience and safety.
The feedback form additionally gives students an opportunity to highlight concerns related to their safety, well-being or overall hostel experience.
Survey Follows Studentโs Death and Campus Protests
The initiative follows the death of Wakode, an IIT Bombay student who died by suicide on September 18. His death occurred after he was allegedly found using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination.
The incident led to significant student protests on campus, with students raising concerns and demanding that the institute address issues affecting student welfare.
Following the protests, IIT Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare held an open house to hear concerns raised by students.
Focus on Hostel Safety and Student Well-Being
The fan survey forms part of the instituteโs broader efforts to examine hostel living conditions and student safety. By seeking direct feedback, IIT Bombay is evaluating whether changes to fan arrangements could address specific concerns while maintaining adequate cooling and usability within hostel rooms.
The exercise also highlights the wider challenge faced by educational institutions in balancing infrastructure, student comfort and safety considerations across residential campuses.
What Happens Next
The feedback collected through the survey is expected to help IIT Bombay evaluate suitable alternatives and determine whether changes to existing hostel fan arrangements are practical.
While the survey does not itself confirm that ceiling fans will be removed, it indicates that the institute is actively considering alternative configurations as part of its response to student concerns and its ongoing focus on hostel safety and well-being.
