India women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down from the leadership role across all three formats, bringing an end to one of the longest captaincy tenures in Indian women’s cricket. The decision follows a review meeting conducted by the BCCI in Guwahati.

Harmanpreet Says It Is Time to Move On

Harmanpreet announced her decision through a social media post, saying she believes the team is in a good position and that she has fulfilled her responsibility as captain.

The 37-year-old leader now intends to return her primary focus to playing cricket, expressing her desire to enjoy the sport without the additional responsibility of leading the national side.

A Leadership Journey Spanning More Than a Decade

Harmanpreet's journey as India's captain began in 2012, when she first led the side in a T20I against Pakistan in Guangzhou.

She became India's full-time T20I captain in 2016. Following Mithali Raj's retirement, Harmanpreet took charge of the ODI side in 2022 before becoming the team's all-format captain in 2023.

Her tenure therefore spans more than a decade of leadership at different stages, making her one of the most experienced captains in the history of Indian women's cricket.

BCCI Reviews Team’s Recent Progress

The leadership change was announced after a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati that assessed the women's team's performance and direction over the preceding months.

The meeting was attended by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar, alongside discussions around the team's future trajectory.

A New Chapter for Indian Women’s Cricket

Harmanpreet's departure from the captaincy marks the beginning of a new leadership phase for the Indian women's team. Her experience at the international level and long association with the captaincy have made her an important figure in the development of India's women's cricket setup.

While she steps away from leadership, Harmanpreet remains part of the playing group, giving her an opportunity to continue contributing on the field while a new captain takes the team forward.
