International health agencies are closely monitoring passengers and crew linked to a hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch expedition cruise ship MV Hondius after multiple infections and deaths were reported during the voyage.
According to reports, at least two Indian nationals are among the crew members onboard the vessel, though their health status has not yet been publicly disclosed. The ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, departed from Ushuaia on April 1 and is scheduled to arrive in the Canary Islands on May 10.
The outbreak has prompted health authorities across several countries to begin tracing and monitoring passengers who disembarked before the virus was officially confirmed onboard.
Multiple Nationalities Onboard During Outbreak
The vessel reportedly carried around 150 passengers and crew members representing 28 nationalities. Among those onboard were travelers and staff from the United Kingdom, United States, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Canada, Philippines, and India.
Dozens of individuals reportedly left the ship at Saint Helena on April 24, before the scale of the outbreak became widely known. Public health agencies are now working to identify and contact potentially exposed individuals across multiple regions.

WHO Confirms Cases, Rules Out Pandemic Concerns
The World Health Organization has confirmed that five out of eight suspected hantavirus infections linked to the ship have tested positive.
Among the confirmed fatalities is a 69-year-old Dutch woman diagnosed with the virus. Her husband and a German passenger were also reported dead, though investigations into the exact circumstances of those cases are ongoing.
Despite growing public concern, WHO officials have emphasized that the outbreak does not represent a pandemic-level threat similar to COVID-19.
Maria Van Kerkhove stated during a media briefing that hantavirus transmission differs significantly from highly contagious respiratory viruses. According to WHO, the virus generally spreads through close or intimate exposure rather than widespread airborne community transmission.
Understanding Hantavirus
Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses commonly transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents, their saliva, urine, or droppings. In severe cases, the infection can lead to serious respiratory or kidney-related complications.
Human-to-human transmission is considered rare for most hantavirus strains, though certain variants have shown limited transmission in close-contact settings.
Symptoms can initially resemble flu-like illnesses, including fever, fatigue, headaches, and muscle pain, making early detection challenging during travel or expedition environments.
Cruise ships and expedition vessels present unique health management challenges because passengers and crew often remain in close quarters for extended periods while traveling across international waters.
Global Health Systems on Alert
The incident has renewed attention on infectious disease preparedness within the global cruise and tourism industry, which continues to operate under heightened health scrutiny following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Authorities are expected to continue contact tracing and monitoring efforts in the coming days as the vessel approaches Europe. Meanwhile, questions remain regarding onboard containment measures, medical response protocols, and the condition of remaining passengers and crew members.

As investigations continue, international health agencies are urging calm while emphasizing the importance of surveillance, early detection, and rapid response to prevent further spread.
