Google is enhancing its popular photo management platform, Google Photos, with two notable updates aimed at improving both video viewing and image editing experiences. The latest developments include the introduction of a long-awaited playback speed control feature for videos and a broader rollout of the AI-powered “Enhance” tool for Android users worldwide.
Long-Awaited Video Playback Speed Feature Finally Arrives
For years, users have been requesting greater flexibility while watching videos inside Google Photos. A recurring demand on Google’s community forums highlighted the need for an option to adjust video playback speed directly within the app, allowing users to either slow down or speed up playback without relying on external media players.
According to earlier responses from Google representatives on the community forum, the feature was not initially available, with users advised to use third-party or system media players instead. The request quickly gained traction, receiving nearly 200 upvotes, reflecting strong user demand for native playback controls.
Now, Google has begun addressing this gap by introducing a dedicated playback speed option inside the app, enabling users to control video speed seamlessly while viewing content. The move brings Google Photos in line with other modern media platforms that already offer similar functionality.
How the New Video Playback Speed Feature Works
To use the new option, users first need to ensure their Google Photos app is updated to the latest version via the Google Play Store.
Once updated, the process is straightforward. Users can open any video inside the app and tap on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner. From the menu, a new option labeled playback speed appears, allowing users to choose their preferred speed.
Available playback options include 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, and 2x speeds, giving users flexible control over how they view videos. However, the setting is not permanent, and videos will revert to the default 1x speed once they are reopened.
AI Enhance Rolls Out Globally for Android Users
Alongside the playback update, Google is also expanding its AI-powered editing capabilities. The company announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the “AI Enhance” feature is now available to Android users worldwide.
The tool automatically improves lighting and color balance with a single tap, helping users upgrade ordinary photos into more visually refined images without manual editing.
Strong Demand Shaped Feature Development
Interest in AI-based editing tools has been steadily increasing, with Google Photos users frequently engaging with experimental features in Google’s ecosystem. Shimrit Ben Yair, Vice President and General Manager overseeing Google One and Google Photos, also confirmed the popularity of the feature, noting that AI Enhance has been among the most widely used editing filters since its introduction.
She further emphasized that expanding the feature globally for Android users marks an important milestone in Google’s ongoing effort to integrate AI more deeply into everyday photo management experiences.
Industry Perspective: Google Arrives Late to the Feature Trend
While the update has been welcomed by users, it also places Google in a category where similar functionality has already existed across several alternative apps.
Open-source platforms like Fossify Gallery have long offered built-in video playback speed controls, while media players such as VLC Media Player have supported advanced playback customization for years.
This means Google Photos is effectively catching up with established functionality already available elsewhere. However, its advantage lies in integration—offering these tools directly inside a widely used, default photo management app, eliminating the need for third-party applications.
Strengthening Google Photos’ Position in a Competitive Market
With these updates, Google continues to reinforce Google Photos as one of its most feature-rich consumer applications. The combination of improved video playback controls and AI-driven editing tools reflects a broader strategy to enhance user experience while reducing reliance on external apps.
As Google continues to iterate on its photo ecosystem, further refinements and AI-based enhancements are expected, particularly as user demand for smarter, more intuitive media tools continues to grow.
