Bank customers across India could face disruption in branch services at the end of September if the proposed three-day nationwide strike goes ahead. The strike is scheduled for September 28–30, following the second Saturday and Sunday holidays.

Why Banks Could Remain Closed for Five Days

Customers may have to plan their branch visits carefully as September 2026 ends with a possible extended closure.

September 26 falls on the second Saturday, when banks remain closed, while September 27 is a Sunday. If the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) proceeds with its proposed strike from September 28 to September 30, physical bank branches could remain unavailable for five consecutive days.

The proposed strike is expected to affect branch-based banking services, although digital banking channels such as mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs may continue to operate subject to availability.

Five-Day Banking Week Is a Major Demand

The proposed nationwide strike has been called by bank unions primarily over their demand for a five-day banking week.

The UFBU, which represents a large section of the banking workforce, is also raising several issues related to employees and pensioners. These include demands for improvements and updates in pension benefits, a common dearness allowance formula for pensioners, and an option for employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) to shift to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

Bank unions have previously staged nationwide industrial action over these demands.

Strike Comes During Half-Yearly Closing

The timing of the proposed strike could create additional challenges for banks because the dates fall close to the half-yearly closing period for the banking sector.

The closure could therefore affect customers and businesses that need to complete branch-based transactions, documentation or other banking-related work before the end of the half-year.

Customers who have urgent branch-related requirements may therefore need to complete them before the proposed strike dates.

Government Reviews Contingency Arrangements

The Finance Ministry is also scheduled to hold discussions with the heads of public sector banks and regional rural banks regarding arrangements for maintaining essential banking services during the proposed strike.

The focus of the discussions is expected to be on ensuring continuity of critical customer services and minimising disruption if bank employees participate in the three-day nationwide strike.

What Bank Customers Should Do

If the strike goes ahead, customers may experience interruptions in services that require a physical branch visit between September 28 and September 30.

Customers can consider completing important branch-related work in advance and using digital banking facilities for routine transactions wherever possible.

The final impact will depend on whether the proposed strike takes place as scheduled and the extent of employee participation across different banks.
