Apple could bring its popular digital payment service to India as early as October 2026. The initial rollout is expected to focus on card payments, while UPI support remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the launch.
Appleโs Long-Awaited India Entry
Apple may finally introduce Apple Pay in India after years of speculation around the service's arrival. The payment platform, first launched in the US in 2014, is already available across several international markets.
The reported India launch would come at a time when digital payments have become an integral part of everyday transactions. While Apple has significantly expanded its business presence in the country, its dedicated payment service has yet to officially enter the Indian market.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is targeting October 2026 for the India launch.
Will UPI Be Available From Day One?
UPI support is likely to be one of the most important aspects of Apple's India strategy. India's payment ecosystem is heavily driven by UPI, which allows users to make instant bank-to-bank payments through a wide range of apps and banking platforms.
Gurman's information suggests that Apple is considering UPI integration along with traditional card payments. If included from the beginning, this could give Apple Pay a broader role in everyday payments rather than limiting it primarily to card-based transactions.
However, reports have offered different indications about the launch-day feature set. Some earlier reports suggested Apple could initially introduce card payments and bring UPI support at a later stage.
Axis Bank Could Be Among the First Partners
Banking partnerships will also determine how useful Apple Pay is for Indian customers at launch.
Reports indicate that Axis Bank credit cards could be supported when Apple Pay becomes available. Discussions involving other major banks, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, have reportedly not yet been finalised.
This could mean that the number of supported cards and banks may initially be limited, with additional partnerships potentially being added over time.
Why UPI Could Matter for Apple Pay
A card-only launch could give Apple Pay a relatively narrow starting point in India. UPI, on the other hand, is already deeply embedded in the country's digital payment habits.
If Apple combines UPI with its existing device-based payment experience, users could potentially use iPhones and other compatible Apple devices for a wider range of transactions.
For Apple, the challenge will be adapting its global payment platform to India's highly established and competitive digital payments ecosystem.
October Launch Could Bring More Clarity
Apple has not officially confirmed all the details of its India launch, including the complete list of participating banks and whether UPI will be available from the first day.
If the reported October 2026 timeline holds, more information about supported cards, banks and UPI functionality is likely to emerge closer to the launch.
