Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Board has put India’s next phase of digital transformation, emerging technology governance and global telecom cooperation in focus ahead of the India Mobile Congress.

During the October 6 interaction at Seva Teerth, Modi called for technology to be used as an instrument of inclusive and sustainable development, while highlighting cyber fraud, deepfakes and the need for common global technology standards as emerging challenges.

India Pushes for Technology That Reaches the Last Mile

Modi emphasised that digital transformation must extend beyond connectivity and reach underserved communities. He called for technology and digital services to remain affordable and accessible, particularly across the Global South.

Digital Public Infrastructure emerged as another key theme. The Prime Minister highlighted India’s DPI experience and its potential to provide a foundation for developing countries seeking to accelerate digital inclusion and public service delivery.

The emphasis on accessibility comes as India seeks to position its digital infrastructure experience as a model that can be adapted by other emerging economies.

Cyber Fraud and Deepfakes Enter the Global Tech Agenda

Cyber fraud was a significant concern raised during the interaction. Modi called for technology-led approaches to tackle digital fraud and stressed the importance of sustained user awareness around fraudulent calls and other scams.

The discussion also extended to the growing influence of AI-generated content. With deepfakes becoming increasingly sophisticated, Modi suggested exploring mechanisms that could allow users to identify the origin of digitally generated content.

He also called for global standards and common rules for emerging technologies, signalling the need for greater coordination as AI and other technologies increasingly operate across borders.

GSMA Sees New India Opportunities in 6G and AI

GSMA Board members highlighted India’s transformation in mobile and digital connectivity, pointing to the rapid expansion of 4G and 5G, the scale of India’s digital public infrastructure and the development of its telecom and mobile manufacturing ecosystem.

The representatives also identified opportunities for deeper cooperation with India across 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital inclusion and satellite connectivity.

Secure and resilient digital infrastructure was highlighted as an important foundation for sustaining India’s technology growth.

India’s Digital Ambitions Meet Global Telecom Expertise

The interaction comes at an important juncture for India’s telecom and technology ecosystem, with the India Mobile Congress set to bring together global technology companies, telecom operators and policymakers.

The discussions with GSMA leadership underline the expanding scope of India’s engagement with the global mobile ecosystem—from connectivity and telecom manufacturing to AI, cybersecurity and next-generation networks.

The meeting was attended by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of State for Communications Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, GSMA Board members and senior government officials.
