MeitY Launches Digital India CSC Project To Bridge The Rural Digital Divide

Published on

In a pivotal move to traverse the digital divide and ensure digital services are accessible to all, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has introduced the Digital India Common Service Center (DICSC) project. Launching in Pilibhit and Gorakhpur, the initiative aims to set up one model DICSC center in possibly every gram panchayat across 10 districts, creating a total of 4,740 centers nationwide.

DICSC Across India

Pilibhit is set to host 720 DICSC centers, while 1,273 centers will be established in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Other locations include “Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad, Maharashtra) with 870 centers, Chamba (Himachal Pradesh) with 309, Khammam (Telangana) with 589, Gandhinagar (Gujarat) with 288, Mamit (Mizoram) with 100, Jodhpur (Rajasthan) with 415, Leh (Ladakh) with 95, and Puducherry with 81 DICSC centers.” CSC e-Governance Services India Limited will be taking care of the implementation alongside centralized technical monitoring of the centers, as per the press release from the Ministry of Electronics & IT.

A budget of ₹31.61 crore has been allocated for the development of this project. Also, initially, the project will be implemented for six months, with possibly an extension to a further nine months.

This project aims to incorporate an integrated platform to extend essential e-governance services alongside commercial and financial solutions for citizens of rural India. “The Pilibhit centers will provide services such as Aadhaar registration, banking, financial planning, tele-law, telemedicine, education, and e-commerce support.”

High Speed Internet For Growth

Each CSC will be provided with high-speed broadband and state-of-the-art infrastructure to operate as a multifunctional service hub. The project is designed to “Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs), fostering local economic growth and creating job opportunities. The initiative will also ensure transparent and sustainable service delivery through centralized technical monitoring.”

“Additionally, GPS-enabled mobile vans will be deployed to promote government schemes and deliver essential services directly to remote areas. This comprehensive approach is expected to significantly enhance digital literacy and improve access to services in both Pilibhit and Gorakhpur.”

The DICSC project is poised to transform these rural regions with critical digital services, ensuring the empowerment of local entrepreneurs, while promoting inclusive growth. “By addressing the digital divide and enhancing access to essential services, this initiative aims to uplift the economic conditions of Pilibhit and Gorakhpur, integrating them into the broader digital economy,” concluded the release.
