The Indian government is set to launch the IndiaAI Mission portal within the next week, aiming to democratize easy access to artificial intelligence resources across the nation, announced IT minister Ashvini Vaishnaw while addressing a press conference in Bengaluru. The portal's launch underscores India's commitment to leveraging its technically proficient workforce to foster innovation and streamline routine tasks through AI technology.
This initiative is aimed to provide a shared computing infrastructure comprising approximately 18,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), enabling startups and researchers to efficiently develop AI-driven solutions.
“We have established a mechanism to provide 18,000 GPUs as a shared computing facility. This initiative was announced approximately 10 to 15 days ago, and the portal enabling access to these GPUs will be launched soon,” said the minister.
Ten companies have been shortlisted, as per the technical evaluation, to source these GPUs to foster the development including CMS Computers India Pvt Ltd, Ctrls Datacenters Ltd, E2E Networks Limited, Jio Platforms Limited, Locuz Enterprise Solutions Limited, NxtGen Datacenter and Cloud Technologies Private Limited, Orient Technologies Limited, Tata Communications Limited, Vensysco Technologies Limited, and Yotta Data Services Private Limited.
“With robust and high-end Common computing facility in place, India is all set to launch its own safe & secure Indigenous AI model at affordable cost soon,” said Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw in a press release from the Ministry of Electronics & IT.
“The AI model is beginning with the computation facility of roughly 10000 GPUs. Soon the remaining 8693 GPUs will be added. It will largely benefit researchers, students & developers in the beginning. The Technical partners who are participating in the mission have expressed a lot of confidence in the ability of the mission to deliver its objective of democratizing access to computing & that too at a very competitive rate,” it further stated.
The release further compares it with the global model computation standards that cost 2.5 to 3 dollars for using per hour, whereas Indian AI Model computation will charge under ₹ 100 for every hour as the government provides a 40% subsidy; available with semimanual and annual plans to make it more affordable for users.
According to the ministry, in less than 10 months of the rollout of the India AI Mission, the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology has received an unprecedented response and created a high-end facility of almost 18,693 GPUs, which is about nine times higher than the open-source model DeepSeek and two third than Chat GPT.
As per the reports, Yotta Data Services, Tata Communications, E2E Networks, and AWS have already provided over 10,000 GPUs, while the remaining 4,000 GPUs are planned to be purchased from firms including CtrlS Datacenters and Jio Platforms, as per the HT report.
Approximately 70% of the allocated GPUs are high-end models, such as Nvidia's H100, while the remaining 30% consist of lower-capacity or older-generation GPUs. Yotta Data Services contributes significantly to this infrastructure, providing 9,216 GPUs, including 8,192 Nvidia H100 units, the report further reveals.
