India is charting an ambitious course to lead the world in next-generation telecommunications, signaling a decisive transition from technology adopter to global innovator. Speaking in Parliament, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, emphasized that India is no longer merely participating in global telecom advancements but is actively shaping their future.

From Participation to Global Leadership

Highlighting the country’s rapid technological progress, Scindia noted that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, India is taking bold strides toward defining the global 6G landscape. “We are not just preparing for 6G, we are shaping it,” he stated, underscoring a strategic shift in India’s telecom vision.

This transformation is backed by tangible progress. India currently contributes nearly 10% to global 6G patents, with more than 4,000 patents already filed. These figures reflect the country’s growing strength in research, innovation, and intellectual property creation within the telecom ecosystem. Industry observers note that this surge is being driven by a combination of government policy support, academic research, and private sector innovation.

Building a Robust Innovation Ecosystem

India’s emergence as a telecom innovation hub is rooted in its expanding digital infrastructure, strong engineering talent, and proactive regulatory framework. Initiatives focused on indigenous technology development and collaboration between academia and industry are accelerating the pace of innovation.

The government’s push for self-reliance in critical technologies, coupled with global partnerships, is further strengthening India’s position. As 5G deployments mature across the country, the groundwork for 6G research and development is being laid with a clear focus on future-ready applications such as AI-driven networks, ultra-low latency communication, and advanced connectivity solutions.

Industry Aligns with National Vision

Echoing the government’s confidence, Savi Soin, Senior Vice President and President of Qualcomm India, expressed strong optimism about the country’s global standing. “India is going to lead the world in 6G,” he stated, reinforcing the industry’s alignment with the national vision.

Soin further emphasized that Team Qualcomm is fully committed to supporting India’s journey toward 6G leadership, leveraging its global expertise and local innovation capabilities.

A Defining Moment for India’s Tech Future

The convergence of policy direction, industry commitment, and innovation momentum marks a defining moment for India’s telecom sector. As the world begins to shape the contours of 6G, India’s proactive stance signals its intent to move beyond catching up and instead set global benchmarks.

With strong patent activity, increasing R&D investments, and a unified vision across stakeholders, India is positioning itself not just as a participant but as a frontrunner in the next era of global connectivity.
