As a joint venture to strengthen India’s presence in the semiconductor industry, Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) has announced the establishment of a semiconductor facility in Morigaon, Assam. The project is counted among the country’s leading manufacturing sites, boosting the nation’s ambitious self-reliance vision in the semiconductor ecosystem.
With a Rs. 27,000 crore investment, the Morigaon facility is estimated to produce around 48 million semiconductor chips daily. It leverages advanced packaging technologies like Integrated System in Package (ISIP) and Flip Chip. The facility is slated for completion by mid-2025 and targets key industries such as automotive, electric vehicles, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.
Along with technological development, the Morigaon facility serves a significant socio-economic purpose by creating “15,000 direct and 11,000-13,000 indirect jobs, contributing to regional economic growth in Assam and nearby areas,” states the Ministry of Electronics & IT.
“As a high-capacity production site, the facility’s daily output will serve both domestic and international markets, positioning India as a competitive force in the global semiconductor supply chain.”
The new facility is poised to drive significant growth in India's semiconductor market, projected to expand from $38 billion in 2023 to $109 billion by 2030. The India Semiconductor Mission has been launched to foster a robust and sustainable ecosystem for semiconductors and displays, aspiring to establish India as a global frontrunner in electronics design and manufacturing.
Morigaon facility is the development of the Semicon India Program unveiled in 2021 worth a ₹76,000 crore financial outlay, structured to boost the domestic semiconductor industry via strategic partnerships and incentives. This initiative spans various aspects of the semiconductor industry, going beyond fabrication units to include packaging, display components, sensors, Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSATs), and other critical elements, thereby nurturing a comprehensive ecosystem.
The establishment of several semiconductor facilities nationwide, including Tata Electronics' plant in Dholera, Gujarat, and CG Power's unit in Sanand, Gujarat has been approved by the Union Cabinet. Furthermore, Kaynes Semicon Pvt Ltd has also been approved to establish a unit in Sanand.
