Sony has announced another global price increase for its flagship gaming ecosystem, pushing up the cost of the PlayStation 5 lineup for the second time in less than a year. The revised pricing, effective April 2, 2026, affects all major models including the standard PS5, PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal remote player.
The company attributed the decision to continued pressure in the global economic environment and rising costs of critical components such as memory chips and other semiconductor parts that power modern gaming consoles.
Sharp global increase across PlayStation lineup
Under the new pricing structure, all major PlayStation products are becoming significantly more expensive across key markets.
In the United States, the standard PlayStation 5 Disc Edition will now cost 649.99 dollars, marking a 100 dollar increase. The Digital Edition has also been revised upward to 599.99 dollars, reflecting the same hike.
The biggest jump has been reserved for the premium PlayStation 5 Pro, which has increased by 150 dollars to 899.99 dollars, making it one of the most expensive mainstream gaming consoles in the market.
The PlayStation Portal remote player has also seen a notable revision, now priced at 249.99 dollars compared to its earlier 199.99 dollar tag.
According to Sony, the revision is part of necessary adjustments to align with ongoing global cost pressures. Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony, emphasized that the company is responding to sustained economic challenges affecting production and supply chains.
Second hike in under a year signals pricing shift in gaming industry
This marks the second major price revision within a year for the PlayStation 5 lineup. Earlier, in August last year, Sony had increased prices across all PS5 models by 50 dollars globally.
Two consecutive hikes in such a short span highlight a broader shift in the console industry, where rising hardware costs and supply chain volatility are increasingly being passed on to consumers.
Industry watchers believe this could signal a structural change in gaming hardware pricing, moving away from long periods of stable console pricing to more frequent revisions based on global economic conditions.

While India was not explicitly included in the global announcement, the market is expected to feel the ripple effects.

Currently, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is priced at 49,990 rupees in India, while the Disc Edition stands at 54,990 rupees.
With global prices rising again, analysts suggest that India could see another revision in the coming weeks or months, potentially sharper than the previous adjustment depending on currency movement and import costs.
PS5 Pro launch expectations add to market buzz
The PlayStation 5 Pro, which has already received the steepest global price hike, is still not officially available in India. However, its appearance on the Bureau of Indian Standards certification list has fueled strong speculation about an imminent launch.
The timing is particularly significant as the gaming industry prepares for a major demand cycle driven by upcoming blockbuster releases, including Grand Theft Auto 6, expected to significantly boost console adoption worldwide.
