

OpenAI has promoted Uday Ruddarraju to the role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Compute, placing him at the forefront of the company's rapidly expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure strategy. Ruddarraju, who joined OpenAI in July 2025, will now lead the company's compute infrastructure, overseeing the technologies and systems that power its frontier AI models. Driving OpenAI's Compute Expansion

Brings Experience from xAI
Before joining OpenAI, Ruddarraju served as Head of Infrastructure Engineering at Elon Musk's xAI, where he led the engineering efforts behind the Colossus supercomputerโone of the largest AI computing clusters developed to support next-generation foundation models.
Prior to xAI, he held engineering and leadership positions at Robinhood, eBay, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), building expertise in cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and large-scale platform engineering.
Originally from Hyderabad, India, Ruddarraju earned his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology before completing a Master's degree at the University of Minnesota.
Building the World's Largest Compute Footprint
Ruddarraju has outlined an ambitious vision for OpenAI's infrastructure roadmap, with the company aiming to build one of the world's largest AI compute footprints.
