World University of Design Rolls Out the Concept of ‘Seed Bombing’

In a world where consumerism and materialism is given more importance, the celebration of World Environment Day is a time to reflect on whether the collective behavior needs to be modified to address challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. World University of Design (WUD), a UGC recognized university and India’s first and only university dedicated to education in the creative domain, today announced that they have become a totally green campus. The university has chalked out a charter that includes environment friendly practices along with eco-friendly design solutions in order to develop and promote a green campus. Taking this initiative forward the university launched a series of environmentally-themed activities and workshops in the campus on World Environment Day.

University has introduced the concept of Seed bombing, also known as aerial reforestation - a technique of introducing vegetation to land by throwing or dropping seed balls. Students and staff are collecting a variety of seeds from across the country seeds which will be rolled with mud and cow dung to make little balls and seed bombing a designated area in the campus. The method helps to bring down the mortality rate of trees by 50%. The cow dung helps to keep animals and pests away. The Seed Bomb Jungle, WUD’s own Vanrai will be dedicated to planting seeds so that the culture of saving seeds remains alive and a positive environment towards sustainability through this activity is created

Other activities at the campus include ‘Sewage Water Disposal’, ‘Waste segregation Bins’, ‘Installation of Solar Panels’, ‘Paper Recycling via Paper Machine’ amongst others. The initiatives are an endeavor to support the green activities that are already in action in the lush green campus of WUD.

Elaborating on the initiative Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Vice Chancellor, World University of Design said, “The campaign aims to raise awareness for taking positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. Our campus activities are a minor contribution towards the goal of promoting and conserving green living. Besides developing a green campus through our environmental friendly initiatives, we hope to set a good example for the upcoming Design, Architecture, Fashion, Visual arts & Management students. The campaign also seeks to encourage people to change their habits and participate in green activities with an effort to reduce pollution and help build a sustainable future.”

For Sewage water disposal activity, students are involved in filtering and utilizing sewage water for gardening purpose in the campus.WUD hasal so installed Solar Panels in the campus and utilizes them for its energy needs. The campus has waste segregation bins in every place to help in separation of wet & dry waste material. There are separate bins for plastic waste which can be utilized for new product development.

With “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the theme for World Environment 2018, WUD urges people to urgently reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic polluting our oceans, damaging marine life and threatening human health.
